A unique day in the history of Tamil-speaking world: CM Stalin on Tamil Nadu Day

CM Stalin commemorated Tamil Nadu Day by highlighting its 1967 origin when DMK renamed Madras State. He credited Perarignar Anna for passionately declaring "Tamil Nadu" thrice in the assembly. The DMK government in 2022 shifted celebrations from November 1 to July 18. The day honors Tamil linguistic identity and DMK's historic political legacy.

Tamil Nadu, July 18

On the occasion of Tamil Nadu Day, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin shared a post on X on Friday, noting that this day in 1967 marked the transformation of the first line of this land's identity and is a unique day in the history of the Tamil-speaking world.

He said in a post, "A unique day in the history of the Tamil-speaking world! July 18, 1967: The day the D.M.K. movement assumed power, transforming the very first line of this land's identity."

On this day, the name of Tamil Nadu was officially adopted, fulfilling a dream cherished in our hearts for ages, CM Stalin stated in the post.

He further stated in the post, "A day when the great leader, Perarignar Anna, bestowed the name upon our motherland, proclaiming 'Tamil Nadu, Tamil Nadu, Tamil Nadu' three times in the assembly, as the sound of desks being thumped echoed to the skies--this is #TamilNaduDay!"

Tamil Nadu Day, also referred to as Tamil Nadu Dhinam, is a holiday celebrated in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu to commemorate the formation of the state. Tamil Nadu was formed on November 1, 1956, as the state of Madras. On July 18, 1967, the state was officially renamed from Madras State to Tamil Nadu.

The DMK government had, in 2022 declared July 18 as Tamil Nadu Day by rescinding an earlier order of the previous AIADMK government making November 1. For, it was on July 18, 1967 the first DMK government of CN Annadurai passed a resolution in the state assembly to rechristen the state as Tamil Nadu which was called Madras State till then. Later, parliament gave its approval for the same.

While I respect Tamil culture, I wonder if changing the holiday date from Nov 1 to July 18 was necessary? Seems like political one-upmanship rather than genuine celebration of heritage.

My grandparents still remember the day Madras became Tamil Nadu. They say the streets were filled with celebration and Tamil pride. We must preserve this history for future generations.

As someone who moved to Chennai for work, I've fallen in love with Tamil culture. The language is so beautiful and the people so warm. Happy Tamil Nadu Day!

While celebrating our state's identity is important, I hope we focus more on actual development issues too - better infrastructure, education, and job opportunities for all Tamils.
