Unfortunate development: Telangana Jagruthi chief Kavitha condemns shoe-hurling attempt on CJI

Telangana Jagruthi chief K Kavitha condemns shoe-hurling attempt on CJI BR Gavai while criticizing Telangana CM Revanth Reddy for Dalit minister insult

"It's a very unfortunate development, and I don't think that should have ever happened - K Kavitha"

Hyderabad, October 7

Telangana Jagruthi President K Kavitha on Tuesday condemned the attempt to hurl a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai, calling it an "unfortunate development".

Praising the CJI's demeanour in handling the situation, she said that Justice Gavai's reaction shows the "solid base" of the Indian justice system.

Kavitha told ANI, "It's a very unfortunate development, and I don't think that should have ever happened. But I also saw how the CJI has reacted, which speaks volumes about the solid base on which the Indian justice system is thriving so far, and I hope it will continue to do so."

Further, she took a jibe at Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy for an alleged insult against a Dalit Minister.

She said, "There is also another unfortunate incident that has happened here. A Dalit minister is being insulted by another minister in the same cabinet. From the time when Revanth Reddy's government was formed here in Telangana, Dalits have always been insulted."

"The Deputy Chief Minister himself was seated on a lower chair than the Chief Minister and his family in an honourable temple of Telangana. Unfortunately, this trend is continuing in Telangana. This should not have happened. We are protesting against this," the Telangana Jagruthi chief added.

Lawyer Rakesh Kishore, who attempted to hurl a shoe at the CJI, invited criticism from several political leaders.

Earlier today, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara condemned the incident, calling it an "insult" to the office and the Constitution.

Speaking with reporters, Parameshwara said that the action should have been taken against the lawyer who attempted to stage a show at the CJI.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut claimed the incident was not just about the CJI but a broader reflection of the current political climate, where those in power disregard the Constitution and their followers resort to such acts.

"The shoe has not been thrown or attempted to be thrown at CJI BR Gavai, but rather it was an attempt to throw the shoe at the Constitution of India. The people in power are not ready to follow the Constitution of India, and their followers are doing these kinds of things," Raut said.

Meanwhile, Rakesh Kishore said that he does not regret his action.

Speaking to ANI on Tuesday, Kishore said that he was hurt by the CJI's remarks while dismissing a plea seeking restoration of the structure of Lord Vishnu in the Javari temple in Khajuraho.

While I condemn the shoe-hurling attempt, I must say Kavitha is being hypocritical here. She's using this incident to score political points against Revanth Reddy's government. Both issues need to be addressed separately.

The CJI handled the situation with remarkable dignity. This shows why our judiciary is respected worldwide. Such acts of protest only weaken our democratic institutions. 🇮🇳

As someone who has studied Indian democracy, I'm concerned about the growing trend of disrespect towards constitutional authorities. There are proper channels for expressing dissent in a democracy.

The real issue here is the lawyer's frustration with the judicial process. While his method was wrong, we need to ask why people feel so helpless that they resort to such acts. Our justice system needs to be more accessible to common people.

Strong action must be taken against the lawyer. The dignity of the Supreme Court cannot be compromised. This sets a dangerous precedent for our democracy.
