Bhubaneswar, July 13

AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Director Dr Ashutosh Biswas, on Sunday assured that the medical team is providing the best possible care to the patient of the Balasore self-immolation case.

This comes after a student allegedly self-immolated herself, sparking widespread concern and outrage. The student was rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar in critical condition, where she is currently fighting for her life.

The student was admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar with severe burns, covering almost 90-95% of her body. She is currently on a ventilator in the ICU, and her condition is critical.

"Yesterday, we received the patient in critical condition. The patient is on a ventilator in the ICU. She has almost 90-95 per cent burns. The patient is critical, we are trying our best. We are providing the best possible care to the patient. A committee has been formed to look after various aspects, multi-disciplinary critical care...," Dr Biswas told ANI.

Earlier today, Odisha Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj said that the state government will bear the entire cost of medical treatment of the Fakir Mohan (FM) Autonomous College student who attempted self-immolation in protest against alleged sexual harassment by an assistant professor.

Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, who visited AIIMS to meet with the victim, said that a high-level committee has been formed to investigate the incident. He assured that strict action would be taken based on the committee's findings.

"A high-level committee has been formed to investigate this incident. Today, the team has left Bhubaneswar for an investigation, and strict action will be taken based on the findings of that team. I went to AIIMS. I am going to AIIMS today also. We are closely looking at how the girl's health can be improved, and how she can recover. The government will bear the entire expense. And today, the Health Minister is also going with us. We will also talk to her parents today," he said.

Balasore Police on Saturday arrested the accused in the FM (Auto) College female student self-immolation attempt case and produced her before the court.

Meanwhile, the Odisha government have formed a committee to conduct a thorough inquiry into the alleged harassment case against Samira Kumar Sahu, Assistant Professor at FM Auto College, who has been arrested following the suicide attempt by a female student of the college on July 12.

While I appreciate AIIMS doctors' efforts, why do students feel suicide is the only option? Colleges must have proper grievance redressal systems. This case shows systemic failure at multiple levels.

The government's quick response in bearing medical costs and forming committee is commendable. But we need preventive measures - more counselors in colleges, gender sensitization programs for faculty.

As someone working in education sector, this terrifies me. We need anonymous complaint systems in all institutions. Young lives shouldn't be destroyed like this. Praying for her recovery 🙏

The medical team is doing God's work. 90-95% burns is extremely critical. Hope they can save her. Meanwhile, the accused professor's career should be over regardless of court verdict - no place for such people in education.

Why does it take such extreme steps for authorities to act? How many complaints were ignored before this tragedy? We need accountability at every level - from college administration to police. #JusticeForHer

Respectfully, while the medical care is excellent, the government's response seems reactive rather than proactive. How many more cases before proper prevention systems are implemented nationwide?
