Kerala: Young athlete dies in road accident in Alappuzha; lorry driver booked

A promising young athlete's life was tragically cut short in a preventable road accident. Lakshmi Lal was on her way to training when a trailer lorry struck her scooter from behind. The 19-year-old had already achieved district-level success in track events and was pursuing her education. Police have charged the driver with rash and negligent driving under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Alappuzha, September 12

A 19-year-old budding athlete, Lakshmi Lal, daughter of Mani Lal and Manju of Vellikad, met with a tragic end after a trailer lorry rammed into her scooter at Kalavoor, Alappuzha, on Thursday evening.

The accident occurred around 4:25 pm near the Kerala Bank, just north of Kalavoor Junction on the Alappuzha-Cherthala NH service road. Lakshmi was on her way to the Prithikulamkara Stadium in Mararikulam South for training along with veteran athlete Vineetha, an FIR by the Kerala police said.

Vineetha, who was riding the scooter, suffered injuries but survived.

According to the FIR, the trailer lorry was being driven negligently and attempted to overtake the scooter from behind when it struck the two-wheeler. Both riders were thrown off balance, and Lakshmi came under the wheels of the lorry, sustaining fatal head injuries. She was rushed to Providence Hospital in Thumpoly but was declared dead on arrival.

A first-year B.Com student at Ambalappuzha Government College, Lakshmi had won district-level titles in the 800m and 1500m track events and represented the district in state meets.

Police have registered a case against the driver under Sections 281, 125(a), and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, citing rash and negligent driving that endangered human life.

Lakshmi's body has been handed over to the family after the post-mortem.

Heavy vehicle drivers on Kerala roads drive like they own the road. This is not the first such incident. Authorities need to enforce stricter driving tests and regular checks for commercial drivers.

So tragic. She was representing our district in state meets and had such a bright future ahead. The government should provide proper compensation to her family and ensure the driver faces strict punishment.

While the driver is clearly at fault, we also need better road infrastructure and dedicated lanes for two-wheelers. Mixing heavy vehicles with scooters on narrow roads is a recipe for disaster.

Om Shanti 🙏. This young girl was the pride of her family and our state. Such negligent driving should be treated as culpable homicide, not just rash driving. The laws need to be stricter.

Heartbreaking news. As someone who frequently travels on Kerala roads, I've noticed how impatient drivers become around two-wheelers. We need better driver education and awareness campaigns.

So sad to read this. Young students traveling for education and training should feel safe on our roads. The college and sports authorities should provide safer transportation options for athletes.
