Jury insulted noble tradition of Indian cinema: CM Vijayan after 'The Kerala Story' wins two national awards

Pinarayi Vijayan criticizes jury for honoring 'The Kerala Story', calling it a divisive Sangh Parivar agenda that insults Indian cinema's secular values.

"By honouring a film that spreads blatant misinformation... the jury has lent legitimacy to a divisive ideology - Pinarayi Vijayan"

Thiruvananthapuram, August 1

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday strongly criticised the 71st National Film Awards jury for their decision to award 'The Kerala Story' the Best Director and Best Cinematography awards, alleging that the move "lent credibility" to a narrative rooted in the "divisive" ideology of the Sangh Parivar.

"By honouring a film that spreads blatant misinformation with the clear intent of tarnishing Kerala's image and sowing seeds of communal hatred, the jury of the National Film Awards has lent legitimacy to a narrative rooted in the divisive ideology of the Sangh Parivar. Kerala, a land that has always stood as a beacon of harmony and resistance against communal forces, has been gravely insulted by this decision," Kerala CM wrote on X.

Kerala CM also said that the awards jury has insulted the noble tradition of Indian cinema that stood for "religious brotherhood" and national integration.

"Through this, they are implementing the Sangh Parivar agenda of turning cinema into a weapon to implement the communal agenda. We strongly protest against this action. Every Malayali and all democratic believers in the country should raise their voice against this injustice. We must rally against politics that turn art into a weapon to foster communalism," he said.

At the 71st National Film Awards, 'The Kerala Story' won Best Director and Best Cinematography awards.

Directed by Sudipto Sen, 'The Kerala Story', which was released on May 5, 2023, emerged as one of the most successful films at the box office last year. However, the movie came in for severe criticism from some quarters, with many, including Opposition leaders, alleging that it falsely claimed that 32,000 women, who went missing from Kerala, were forced into terrorism upon alleged conversion or sold to ISIS as sex slaves.

The movie faced a backlash in several states, with the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government imposing a ban on screening the film in the state.

As a Malayali, I'm deeply hurt by this decision. Kerala has always been a model of secularism. The film's exaggerated claims about conversions are pure fiction. Awards should go to films that reflect reality, not RSS fantasies 🙏

While I respect artistic freedom, facts shouldn't be compromised. The 32,000 number was clearly debunked. Technical excellence shouldn't overshadow ethical responsibility in cinema. The jury should reconsider.

The film highlights an important issue that mainstream media ignores. Love jihad is real and Kerala has many victims. If CM has proof it's false, he should present it instead of crying foul. Awards are well deserved!

Both sides are politicizing cinema. The film has technical merits but questionable facts. Meanwhile, Vijayan's reaction seems more about upcoming elections than art. Can't we have balanced discussions anymore? 😔

National awards losing credibility. Next they'll give best actor to Kangana for playing Rani Lakshmibai! When will our institutions stop being BJP mouthpieces? Kerala's secular fabric is stronger than any propaganda film.

As a film student, I'm conflicted. The cinematography was brilliant, but the narrative
