JD Vance hints he would take over as US President if tragedy strikes

US Vice President JD Vance states his role has prepared him to assume the presidency if needed, while brushing off 2028 speculation and praising Trump's health.

"God forbid there's a terrible tragedy, I can't think of better on-the-job training than what I've gotten over the last 200 days - JD Vance"

Washington DC, August 29

United States Vice President JD Vance on Thursday appeared to have indicated that he would take over as the President if a "tragedy" strikes, USA Today has reported.

Vance, 41, who is among the youngest Vice Presidents to have served in the US, told USA Today that his current role has prepared him to take over Trump's office if a tragedy struck.

"God forbid there's a terrible tragedy, I can't think of better on-the-job training than what I've gotten over the last 200 days," Vance said, touting Trump's "incredibly good health" and added that he expects the president to serve a full term.

Trump said earlier this month that Vance is the most likely heir to his MAGA movement, but Vance continued to brush off speculation about his 2028 plans, as per USA Today.

Vance said that his wife, Usha and he are focused on the job he has right now. "And if that door opens later on, we'll figure it out then."

Vance then recalled setting foot in the Oval Office for the first time in January.

"It was an amazing thing. I was overwhelmed by the grandeur of the office, all of the incredible history that had been made," Vance said. "But if I was being honest, it was the middle winter, the drapes were closed. It was very dark. It had kind of a dark and gloomy feeling. This is the workplace of the leader of the free world. It should be a little brighter. I like what the president has done to it," as quoted by USA Today.

Earlier on August 6, US President Donald Trump suggested that Vance is "most likely" the heir apparent to the Make America Great Again movement, as per CNN.

Trump also proposed that Vance and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio join for a future Republican ticket.

"Well, I think most likely," Trump told reporters when asked whether Vance was MAGA's "heir apparent." "In all fairness, he's the vice president," CNN quoted him as saying.

"I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form," he added. "I also think we have incredible people, some of the people on the stage right here."

As an American living in Delhi, I find this concerning. The VP's job is to support the President, not speculate about succession. This kind of talk creates unnecessary instability.

Why is he talking about the Oval Office being "dark and gloomy"? Shouldn't he focus on policy matters rather than interior decoration? 😅 American politics is so dramatic compared to our system.

At 41, he's younger than most of our state CMs! But this kind of ambition showing so openly isn't a good look. In Indian politics, such statements would create major controversy.

Honestly, this is normal VP positioning. Every VP has to be prepared to take over. The media is making it sound worse than it is. He did emphasize Trump's good health and full term expectations.

The real story is Trump already naming him as heir to MAGA movement. This is like political dynasty building in the making. American democracy showing concerning trends. 🤔
