"Today is the first day of Sawan month—I prayed for everyone's well-being and our nation's progress. – Vishwajit Rane"

Ujjain, July 11

Goa Minister Vishwajit Rane on Friday offered prayers at the renowned Mahakaleshwar Temple in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain on the first day of the holy month Sawan.

Speaking to ANI, Rane expressed his faith and devotion, saying, "...Today is the first day of the Sawan month and I prayed for the well-being of everyone. May our nation continue to develop...I am feeling very good after offering prayers at the temple..."

On this occasion, devotees flocked to the Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar temple to offer prayers.

To mark the occasion,' Rudrabhishek' and 'aarti' was performed at the temple. The visuals show milk, curd, and honey are being offered to Lord Shiva during the 'Rudrabhishek', followed by the Vedic chants by the priests.

The devotees were seen queueing up to worship Lord Shiva on the first day of Sawan.

This year, Sawan month commences from July 11 and will conclude on August 9.

Sawan is the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar, and is considered one of the holiest months. Every Monday during this period is regarded as a highly auspicious time to fast and seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. All Tuesdays or Mangalwar in the Shravan month are dedicated to Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva.

Sawan holds a special place in Hindu mythology as the month when Lord Shiva is believed to have consumed the poison that emerged from the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), saving the universe from its toxic effects.

Devotees undertake fasts and offer prayers to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva during this period.

Many choose to abstain from consuming grains and eat only fruits, milk, and specific foods permissible during fasting.

The chanting of Shiva mantras, singing bhajans (devotional songs), and performing Rudrabhishek (ceremonial bathing of Shiva Lingam with holy substances) are common practices observed with fervour across households and temples during the Sawan month.

While I appreciate the minister's devotion, I wish our leaders would show this same dedication in solving Goa's garbage and tourism problems. Spirituality is important, but so is governance.

Sawan is my favorite month! The whole atmosphere changes - markets full of belpatra, people wearing rudraksha, and the sound of "Om Namah Shivaya" everywhere. Planning to visit Trimbakeshwar this weekend for darshan. Har Har Mahadev! 🕉️

The visuals of Rudrabhishek are mesmerizing! For those who can't visit Ujjain, many temples across India live stream the aarti during Sawan. Technology helping devotion - what a time to be alive!

Remember to carry water bottles and wear comfortable footwear if visiting Mahakaleshwar this Sawan. The queues can be 4-5 hours long in peak time. But the divine darshan is worth every minute of wait!
