We should focus on development...: Shashi Tharoor on sharing stage with PM Modi

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor emphasizes development over politics after sharing stage with PM Modi at Kerala's Vizhinjam Seaport inauguration.

"That is a very good example of how we can focus on development for the benefit of the nation ahead of whatever political issues may divide us - Shashi Tharoor"

Kochi, May 3

Reflecting on his appearance alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an event in Kerala, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor emphasised that the Vizhinjam Seaport, long envisioned by the people of Kerala, demonstrates how national development can transcend party lines.

Speaking to ANI, Tharoor highlighted the Vizhinjam Seaport project as a symbol of cooperative federalism, praising its successful commissioning in Thiruvananthapuram despite political differences.

"Yesterday, the Prime Minister came to Thiruvanathapuram, and we saw the official commissioning of the Vizhinjam Seaport. The port has been a dream of the people of Vizhinjam and Thiruvanathapuram, my constituency, and Kerala for a very, very long time. A project initiated by a Congress government was continued by a Communist Left front government and then commissioned by a BJP government in the centre," Tharoor said.

"That is a very good example of how we can focus on development for the benefit of the nation ahead of whatever political issues may divide us," he said.

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a political jibe at the Opposition INDIA bloc during the inauguration of the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram stating that the presence of Shashi Tharoor on stage "would disturb the sleep" of many people.

In his address during the public event after the inauguration, PM Modi said, "I want to tell Chief Minister (Pinarayi Vijayan), you are a strong pillar of INDI alliance, Shashi Tharoor is also sitting here."

"Today's event is going to disturb the sleep of many", Prime Minister Modi said.

Tharoor, a four-time Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, had recently praised the PM Modi-led Central government over his remarks on the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. Tharoor had also been criticised by his party colleagues over PM Modi's diplomatic tasks with US President Donald Trump.

Tharoor is absolutely right! Development should be above politics. Vizhinjam port will create thousands of jobs and boost Kerala's economy. Why can't we appreciate good work regardless of which party does it? 🤔

While I appreciate Tharoor's mature stance, PM Modi's jibe was unnecessary. Such remarks only create more division when we should be celebrating a landmark project for Kerala. Can't our leaders rise above petty politics?

As a Malayali, I'm proud to see Vizhinjam finally become reality! This port will put Kerala on global trade map. Credit should go to all governments - UPA, LDF and NDA - for making it happen. #DevelopmentForAll

Tharoor's presence shows maturity, but his own party workers are unhappy with him. Congress needs to decide - either oppose everything BJP does or support national interest projects. This confusion helps nobody.

The Vizhinjam port is game-changer for India's maritime trade! Will reduce dependence on Colombo/Singapore ports. Shows what happens when state & center work together. More such projects needed in Northeast too!

Why is it news when politicians act like mature adults? This should be normal! But in today's politics, even basic decency becomes breaking news. Sad state of affairs 😞 Hope Vizhinjam inspires more cooperation.
