Definition of dumb...: Anurag Kashyap criticizes Netflix CEO for questioning 'Sacred Games' launch strategy

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap criticizes Netflix's Ted Sarandos for questioning 'Sacred Games' launch strategy in a scathing Instagram post

"I always knew the tech guys are dumb when it comes to storytelling - Anurag Kashyap"

New Delhi, June 8

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has responded strongly to recent remarks made by Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos about the streaming platform's initial programming choices in India.

Kashyap, who co-created Netflix India's debut original series 'Sacred Games', did not mince words in his criticism.

The controversy began during Sarandos' appearance on a Nikhil Kamath podcast, where the executive reflected on Netflix's early foray into the Indian market.

He expressed reservations about whether launching with 'Sacred Games' in 2018 was the right strategic move, suggesting the platform might have benefited from a more "populist" content offering at the time.

Kashyap took to Instagram to express his displeasure, sharing a screenshot of a report on Sarandos' comments on Nikhil Kamath's podcast.

In a post, he wrote, "He should have started with Saas Bahu... he would have done well. Which he is doing now. I always knew the tech guys are dumb when it comes to storytelling, but @tedsarandos is the definition of dumb - that I didn't know. Good to discover that. This explains everything now."

'Sacred Games', starring Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, was widely praised upon its debut and marked a pivotal moment in India's streaming content landscape.

Directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, the gritty thriller was lauded for its storytelling and production value, although its second season drew mixed reactions, and the series was not continued beyond that.

Anurag Kashyap is absolutely right here! Sacred Games put Indian OTT on the global map. Netflix should be grateful for that bold content. Typical corporate mindset - first they take risks, then pretend they knew better all along. 🙄

While I love Kashyap's work, calling someone "dumb" publicly isn't professional. He could have made his point more diplomatically. Sacred Games was brilliant, but let's not forget Netflix is a business - they have to think about mass appeal too.

Netflix India's problem isn't Sacred Games - it's their pricing! ₹649/month is too much for average Indian families. They should focus on making subscriptions affordable rather than questioning their best show.

Sacred Games was a game-changer! I remember watching it with my college friends - we were hooked from episode 1. Netflix should understand that quality content builds loyalty, not just mass-market shows. #TeamKashyap

Both have valid points. Sacred Games was brilliant cinema, but Netflix needs both - niche and mass content. The real issue is why they didn't continue investing in quality after Sacred Games? Now they're just making average content.

Typical foreign company not understanding Indian audiences. We don't just want saas-bahu dramas - we want complex stories too! Kashyap's response is 🔥 though a bit harsh. But after working in the industry, I understand his frustration.
