"Will continue to struggle for rights of people": CPI(M) acknowledges "serious setback" in Keralam, Bengal polls

CPI(M) acknowledges a "serious setback" in Kerala and West Bengal assembly polls, as BJP wins in Bengal and DMK-led alliance loses ground in Tamil Nadu.

"We assure that the Party will take all necessary corrective measures and continue to struggle for the rights of the people and in defence of secularism and democracy - CPI(M) Polit Bureau"

New Delhi, May 5

Communist Party of India has acknowledged what it called a "serious setback" for the Left Democratic Front in Keralam and West Bengal Assembly polls.

In a statement issued by party's Polit Bureau, the CPI(M) also said that the DMK-led alliance suffered a setback in Tamil Nadu, where the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by Vijay emerged as a major force.

"The two major features of the assembly election results are the serious setback to the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Keralam and the victory of the BJP in West Bengal. The DMK-led alliance also suffered a setback in Tamil Nadu, where the TVK led by Vijay emerged as a major force," it said.

The party thanked the people and its cadres for their support. It added that the party respects the people's verdict.

"We assure that the Party will take all necessary corrective measures and continue to struggle for the rights of the people and in defence of secularism and democracy," it said.

Meanwhile, Keralam Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar accepted the resignation tendered by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and requested him to continue until alternate arrangements are made, according to a statement by Lok Bhavan.

Vijayan's resignation came as the Congress-led UDF unseated the incumbent LDF government by winning 63 out of 140 seats in the state assembly elections on Monday. The Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led LDF secured 26 seats, followed by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), which won 22 seats. The results mark the exit of the Pinarayi Vijayan-led administration in the state.

It's interesting to see how regional parties are shaping up. Vijay's TVK making a mark in Tamil Nadu at the expense of DMK is a major shift. Indian politics is always full of surprises 🇮🇳

Well, CPI(M) keeps talking about "struggle for rights" but people in Bengal gave BJP a clear mandate. The Left needs to accept that their ideology is losing ground. In Kerala, even the Muslim League bagged 22 seats while LDF got only 26—that's a humiliating result. Arre yaar, ground reality check needed!

Respecting people's verdict is right, but "corrective measures" cannot just be a press release. If CPI(M) wants to stay relevant, they should focus on ground-level issues—unemployment, infrastructure, corruption—rather than just secularism rhetoric. The youth in Kerala wants jobs, not ideology.

The statement says "defence of secularism and democracy" but the BJPs victory in Bengal shows the electorate is comfortable with Hindutva politics. Also, Vijay emerging as a major force in TN is a wildcard. Indian democracy is shifting, and the Left seems like an ageing uncle at a Gen-Z party.

I'd say Pinarayi Vijayan gave Keralam good governance in many ways—K-FON, infrastructure, welfare schemes—but people got fed up with cadre violence and the CM's arrogance. The UDF winning 63 seats vs LDF's 26 is a clear message: power should be accompanied by humility. Good luck with the struggle, CPI(M).
