Will contest Bengal polls from wherever the party asks me: Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury says he will contest West Bengal elections from any constituency the party chooses, amid speculation over Berhampore.

"I am a soldier of the party, and I will contest from wherever the party asks me to. - Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury"

Murshidabad, March 19

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Thursday said that he is a "soldier of the party" and will contest elections from any constituency in West Bengal decided by the party leadership.

The Congress has decided to contest the polls on its own in the state, making the contest four-cornered.

"I am a soldier of the party, and I will contest from wherever the party asks me to. Everyone in our party is being advised to fight the elections together," Chowdhury said.

There is speculation that Chowdhury, who is a senior party leader in West Bengal, could be fielded from Berhampore. He lost the last Lok Sabha polls from the seat.

Congress has fared poorly in the last two assembly polls in the state, which it fought in alliance with the Left parties.

The party fought the 2011 assembly polls in alliance with Trinamool Congress. The West Bengal assembly election will be held in two phases, with polling scheduled for April 23 and April 29.

The Election Commission has also announced the election schedule for Assam, Keralam, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu.

While Assam, Keralam and Puducherry will go to the polls on April 9, Tamil Nadu will face polls on April 23.

Votes will be counted on May 4.

Respect for his commitment! 🙏 A true leader follows the party's decision. But honestly, Congress needs to rebuild its base from the ground up in Bengal. Just contesting elections isn't enough; they need to connect with the youth and local issues.

Four-cornered fight means BJP might benefit from the split in anti-BJP votes. Congress and Left should have found a way to work together for a stronger opposition. This feels like political ego over people's welfare.

Good to see senior leaders setting an example. Party comes first. But I hope they ask him to contest from a winnable seat. Losing again from Berhampore won't help anyone. All the best to him! 🤞

Interesting to watch from outside. The fragmentation of the opposition in West Bengal seems to be a recurring theme. A unified strategy is crucial to present a credible alternative to the ruling party.

As a Bengali, I feel Congress has lost its connect here. They keep changing allies - first TMC, then Left, now alone. Where is the consistent ideology? Chowdhury ji is a loyal leader, but the party needs a better plan for Bengal.
