Bengal CM makes surprise visits to Fire Dept HQ, police stations

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday made surprise visits to police stations and the fire department headquarters in Kolkata.
Adhikari visited Watganj Police Station and Ekbalpur Police Station in the Kolkata Port area before heading to the Kolkata Police headquarters in Lalbazar, where he held discussions with Police Commissioner Ajay Nand.
Earlier in the day, Adhikari, who is also the Police Minister, attended a meeting at the Public Works Department before suddenly setting out to inspect police stations. Deputy Commissioner of Ports was present during the inspection.
The Chief Minister said help desks would be set up in every police station in the state to assist women. He enquired whether the process had begun at Watganj and Ekbalpur police stations and checked police station records.
After visiting Lalbazar, Adhikari went to the fire department headquarters, where he spoke to officials about the department's preparedness to respond quickly in case of accidents or fire incidents. Officials confirmed that the visit was unannounced and part of his surprise inspections.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee also made a surprise visit to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.
He spoke about corruption in hospitals during the Trinamool Congress government era and emphasised the need to overcome it.

Help desks for women in every police station is a much-needed step. I hope proper training is given to the staff too, otherwise it will just be another formality. Let's see how it actually works on the ground, especially in rural areas.
Good initiative but actions speak louder than words. We have seen many promises in the past. Hope these surprise visits are not just for photo ops, and real changes follow. The fire department preparedness is crucial especially in a city like Kolkata.
Surprise checks are great, but the real test will be how they improve the functioning of the police stations. Watching records is one thing, but the public needs to feel safer when they walk in to file a complaint. Still, a step in the right direction.
Great to see leaders stepping out of their comfort zones. But I hope the Health Minister's comments about corruption are not just political mud-slinging. If there is real corruption in hospitals, show us the proof and take action against those responsible.
This is the kind of proactive governance we need. Women's help desks and quick fire response are both essential. Hopefully, the CM will also inspect other essential services like hospitals and public transport soon. Good to see some accountability finally.
