Marco Rubio Flags Massive US-India Energy Push Ahead of New Delhi Visit

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced plans to significantly expand energy cooperation with India, stating the US wants to sell as much energy as India will buy. Rubio will visit India from May 23 to 26, with stops in Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi. The visit will include high-level Quad meetings, reflecting India's growing diplomatic centrality. Rubio also noted that Venezuela's interim president will travel to India next week, opening new avenues for collaboration.

"We want to sell them as much energy as they'll buy": Marco Rubio flags massive US-India energy push

Washington DC, May 22

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday stated that Washington is actively engaged in discussions with India to significantly broaden energy cooperation, confirming that the strategic partnership will be a focal point during his upcoming official visit to New Delhi.

Lauding India's pivotal position on the global stage, the top US diplomat expressed strong enthusiasm for expanding bilateral trade ties. "Well, we want to sell them as much energy as they'll buy. And obviously, you've seen I think we're at historic levels of US production, and US export," Rubio told reporters in Miami as he embarked on the trip to Sweden and India.

The high-profile itinerary will see Rubio travelling across major Indian cities, including Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi, from May 23 to 26.

The Secretary of State underlined Washington's keenness to strengthen India's energy security portfolio through diverse international channels, acknowledging New Delhi's proactive management of global energy pressures resulting from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

"We want to be able to do more. We were already in talks with them to do more. We want them to be a bigger part of their portfolio. We also think there are opportunities with Venezuelan oil," Rubio stated.

Highlighting India's exemplary standing as a frontline global partner, Rubio noted that his highly anticipated itinerary in New Delhi would feature high-level engagements with ministers from the elite Quad grouping.

"They are a great ally, a great partner. We do a lot of good work with them. And so it is an important trip. I'm glad we're able to do it because I think there'll be a lot for us to talk about," Rubio said.

The top US diplomat further emphasised the deep-rooted institutional cooperation between the two democracies within the plurilateral architecture. "We'll also meet with Quad there, which is important. I think my first meeting as Secretary of State was with the Quad. I'm glad we are able to do it now in India, and we're going to do one later in the year as well," Rubio added.

In a reflection of India's growing diplomatic centrality and its key role in navigating complex global energy dynamics, Rubio shared that the acting President of Venezuela Delcy Rodriguez was also scheduled to visit India next week, opening up new avenues of collaboration.

"In fact, it's my understanding that the interim president of Venezuela will be travelling to India next week as well. So, there's opportunities. There's a lot to work on with India," Rubio observed.

"We want to sell them as much energy as they'll buy" — oh so that's the American version of "energy independence"? For decades we imported from the Gulf, now we're diversifying. But mark my words, US energy won't be cheaper than Middle Eastern crude once shipping costs are added. They're using us as a market, not a partner. 🤔

This is the first time a top US official is visiting Agra and Jaipur for bilateral talks — usually they just do the Taj Mahal selfie and leave. Rubio going to smaller cities is a smart diplomatic move. Shows respect to India's federal structure. Plus, with Venezuela's interim president also coming to Delhi next week, looks like India is becoming the new Switzerland of energy diplomacy.

As an American, I'm thrilled to see this. The Quad meeting in New Delhi shows real strategic depth between our countries. India is buying our LNG, we're buying Indian generic drugs. Fair trade without lectures. Though I wish Rubio would stop calling Venezuela's interim president "acting president" — that's still disputed. Anyway, good news for energy markets.

Ek baat toh clear hai — America kehti hai "Jo bechna hai becho" and India is like "Jo lena hai lo". But seriously, we should be pushing for energy technology transfers, not just fuel purchases. Why can't we build our own LNG terminals with American tech? Why only buy finished products? We need to learn, not just consume. Practical hai toh samjhao.
