Vaibhav Sooryavanshi surpasses Abhishek Sharma to script IPL history

New Delhi, May 17

Rajasthan Royals young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has taken the Indian Premier League 2026 by storm, smashing a record-breaking 43 sixes to register the most maximums by an Indian batter in a single IPL season.

In doing so, Sooryavanshi surpassed Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) star batter Abhishek Sharma's previous record of 42 sixes set in 2024.

Sooryavanshi joins the list, featuring some of the biggest names in IPL history, including Virat Kohli, who hit 38 sixes during his iconic 2016 season and repeated the feat in 2024, alongside Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav with the same number of sixes.

Sooryavanshi achieved this feat during his side's IPL clash against the Delhi Capitals (DC), on Sunday in New Delhi at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Sooryavanshi slammed a brilliant 46 off just 21 balls, laced with 5 fours and 3 massive sixes, at an outstanding average of 219.05. Sooryavanshi is also RR's leading run scorer in the ongoing tournament, smashing 486 runs in 12 innings at an impressive average of 40.50, including a hundred and two fifties.

Coming to the match, DC bowling, led by Mitchell Starc's four-fer and key contributions from Lungi Ngidi and Madhav Tiwari, restricted RR to 193/8 in 20 overs despite getting a strong start.

From a strong position of 140/2 in 12 overs, RR were restricted to 193/8, with Starc starring for DC with a four-wicket haul. He was well supported by two wickets each from Ngidi and Madhav.

Finally an Indian batter who can hit sixes at will like the West Indians used to! But I hope he doesn't get carried away. Look at what happened to RR - from 140/2 to 193/8. One bad over and the whole innings collapsed. Stokes and Archer would have been useful here. Still, congratulations to the young man 👏

IPL is all about producing new talent every year. Last year it was Abhishek Sharma, this year it's Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The domestic cricket system is really working well. But let's be honest - 43 sixes is great, but can he do it in international cricket? Let's not hype too much. Remember what happened to some others after one good IPL season...

Stats don't lie! 486 runs in 12 innings at 40.50 average with 43 sixes is phenomenal. But I must say, the way DC's bowling came back in the death overs was excellent. Starc's four-fer showed why he's worth every penny. Vaibhav's 46 off 21 was entertaining but he needs to learn to convert starts into big scores. Still, what a talent! 🏏

As someone who watches cricket from abroad, it's amazing to see the depth of young Indian talent. Vaibhav's six-hitting ability reminds me of a young Yuvraj Singh. But the real test will be how he performs when the pitches aren't flat. Bowling attacks in international cricket won't be as generous as some IPL bowlers. Good luck to him though! 🇮🇳
