UP govt to set up 'Vande Mataram Vatika' across all districts on I-Day

In a notable move to instil the spirit of patriotism and environmental protection, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to set up 'Vande Mataram Vatika' in each district of the state to mark the Independence Day celebrations.
The Forest Department, entrusted with the momentous task of carving out 'special forest zones', has been working overtime to make this a success.
India is set to celebrate its 80th Independence Day on August 15, and this year's campaign is centred on commemorating the 150 years of the National Song 'Vande Mataram'.
Each 'Vatika' will convey a message of patriotism and encourage people to partake in environmental conservation initiatives.
Under the program, 150 saplings will be planted in every district under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative, while the 'Vatika' will be developed through public participation.
Each of these 150 saplings planted in the 'Vatika' will serve as a tribute to nature on the occasion of completing 150 years of the national song Vande Mataram.
The Vande Mataram Vatika will be developed by the Forest Department, with each forested area provided with shady, fruit-bearing, and ecologically beneficial species, while for their upkeep, the local population will take up the day-to-day care roles to ensure a long-lasting heritage.
Sitanshu Pandey, Divisional Forest Officer of Awadh Forest Division, said, "The Vande Mataram Vatika at Kukrail picnic spot will be expanded on Independence Day. An Ashoka Chakra has been constructed here, and Ashoka saplings will be planted on the outer area of its 24 spokes. Fencing will be installed around the area to protect the plants. Sapling plantation will be conducted by retired and serving Indian Forest Service officers, as well as representatives from various sections of society."
Deepak Kumar, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Social Forestry), said, "Vande Mataram Vatika is an important link in the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign. This special drive will ensure widespread public participation. The plantation program will involve public representatives, students from schools/colleges/universities, non-governmental organisations, social groups, families of freedom fighters, NCC/NSS, Youth/Women Welfare Squads (Yuvak/Mahila Mangal Dal), serving and former Indian Forest Service officers, and various government departments."

"Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" is such a touching campaign concept — planting trees in honor of our mothers. The Ashoka Chakra design at Kukrail with 24 spokes and Ashoka saplings sounds really meaningful. But let's be real, will the local population actually take care of these saplings later? Previous green drives have had mixed results. Hope the forest department has a solid maintenance plan beyond just the inauguration ceremony.
Good thought process but the execution will be key. In UP, we've seen many such schemes fizzle out after the photo ops are done. That said, involving students, NCC cadets, and NGOs is a smart move — creates a sense of ownership. Let's hope these Vatikas become actual green lungs for our cities instead of being encroached upon later. 🙏
As someone who's not from India originally but has lived in Lucknow for 5 years, I appreciate this initiative. The melting of nationalism with ecology is something other countries should learn from. Beautiful concept but it's sad we need a national song anniversary to remember our environment. These saplings should have been planted regardless of any occasion. Still, this is a positive step. Just wish they'd also focus on cleaning our rivers and reducing air pollution in cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, and Varanasi. Tree planting is great but not the only answer.
