"I think he's a supporting character": Ryan Reynolds drops big hint on Deadpool franchise future

Ryan Reynolds suggests the Deadpool franchise may shift, with the anti-hero becoming a supporting character in future Marvel projects.

"I don't think I'm going to center him again. I think he's a supporting character. - Ryan Reynolds"

Los Angeles, April 21

Actor Ryan Reynolds has hinted at a new direction for the Deadpool franchise, revealing that the iconic anti-hero may no longer headline future films, according to People.

Asked about the future of the character, Reynolds said, "I have some stuff kind of written," but added, "I don't think I'm going to center him again. I think he's a supporting character."

The actor, who has led the franchise since 2016, explained that Deadpool works best in ensemble settings. "He's a guy that's great in a group," he said.

Reynolds last appeared as Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), alongside Hugh Jackman, marking the character's entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film went on to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.

Despite ongoing speculation about Deadpool's future in Marvel projects, Reynolds clarified that no such involvement has been confirmed. He had earlier said he hasn't "stepped foot on set" for any upcoming films, according to People.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in December 2024, Reynolds said he doesn't think the character Deadpool should ever become a member of the X-Men or Avengers. "He always needs to stay an outsider," he explained at the time.

Sharing his perspective on the character's trajectory, Reynolds noted that Deadpool should remain an outsider. "His coping mechanism of deflecting shame through humor works only when used to pave over his many inadequacies," he said, adding, "If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we're at the end of his journey," according to People.

Meanwhile, Reynolds has a slate of upcoming projects, including Mayday (set to release on Apple TV on September 4), Animal Friends (in theatres January 22, 2027), and an adaptation of Eloise.

I'm a bit disappointed. The solo Deadpool movies were so unique and refreshing. The fear is that in a big ensemble, his edge and R-rated humor might get watered down for a wider audience. Hope Marvel doesn't tame him too much.

Ryan Reynolds understands his character best. If he says Deadpool works best as a supporting outsider, I believe him. Can you imagine him just randomly showing up in a Spider-Man or Doctor Strange movie? The chaos would be epic! 😂

As a huge fan from India, I think this is perfect. Our masala movies often have a comic relief side character who steals the show. Deadpool can be that for the Avengers - the ultimate scene-stealer without the main plot burden. More cameos, please!

Respectfully, I have to disagree with the direction. The solo films built a massive, dedicated fanbase. Moving him to a side role feels like a step back after the success of Deadpool & Wolverine. They should strike while the iron is hot with another main film.

His point about Deadpool being an outsider is key. The moment he becomes a standard superhero in a uniform, the magic is gone. Keeping him as a chaotic, supporting force in the universe is the right call. Can't wait for his next surprise appearance!
