Tamil Nadu: Mechanised boat fishermen unable to venture into sea after damaged boat gets stuck on Sandbar in Thoothukudi

A damaged mechanised fishing boat got stuck on a sandbar and ran aground in the channel area leading to the sea at the Thoothukudi Fishing Harbour.
The boat, belonging to fishermen from Tharuvaikulam, reportedly developed a technical fault while fishing at sea. When efforts were made to bring the boat back to the shore, it became stuck on a sandbar in the harbour entrance channel.
As a result, mechanised boat fishermen from the Thoothukudi Fishing Harbour did not venture into the sea for fishing on Monday.
Earlier, salt production was in full swing across Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi district, but workers renewed their demand for better government welfare measures ahead of the monsoon, when production halts for several months.
They urged the government to improve financial assistance, increase monsoon relief, and extend welfare benefits, including support for land rights, to help sustain their families during the annual off-season.
Speaking to ANI, salt pan worker Sekar said salt production in the district is seasonal, and workers remain without employment once the monsoon begins.
"Every year, salt production in the Thoothukudi district begins in February and continues until October. Once the monsoon season starts, salt production comes to a complete halt. As a result, we are left without work for several months and have to remain at home without any source of income. During the rainy season, the government provides us with a relief of ₹5,000. We rely on this amount to meet our family's basic expenses. Although we possess ownership documents related to the salt pans, we do not have land ownership (patta). We therefore requested the government to take our situation into consideration and provide us with the necessary assistance and appropriate welfare benefits," he appealed.

I feel for the salt pan workers too. Getting only ₹5,000 during monsoon months is not enough to support a family. The government must look into their land ownership issues and provide better welfare schemes. Seasonal workers are always the most vulnerable.
The Thoothukudi Harbour needs better maintenance. Sandbar formation in the channel is a recurring problem during certain seasons. Why can't the authorities dredge it periodically? Our fishermen are skilled but they can't fight nature's obstacles without infrastructure support. The government should also address the salt workers' patta issue - they've been working there for generations.
It's sad how both fishermen and salt workers in Thoothukudi face seasonal unemployment. ₹5,000 per month is not even enough for basic groceries these days. The salt workers need proper land rights and better financial support during the off-season. The government should treat this as a priority.
These are hardworking people who contribute so much to Tamil Nadu's economy. Fishermen bring us fresh fish daily and salt workers provide essential salt for the whole country. Yet they struggle for basic rights like land ownership and fair compensation during off-seasons. Time for officials to act, not just make promises. 🙏
The sandbar issue is just one example of how our coastal infrastructure is neglected. Fishermen rely on the harbour channel daily, so why isn't it maintained properly? Also, the salt workers' demand for patta is completely justified - how can they be expected to live without land security after decades of work? The government should address both issues urgently.
