Rain, thunderstorms and strong winds forecast across Tamil Nadu

Several parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to experience rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds on Tuesday as the southwest monsoon remains active over the region, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai said.
According to the latest forecast, one or two places in districts along the Western Ghats and southern Tamil Nadu may receive light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning during the day.
Strong surface winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph are also likely in these areas. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under trees or near weak structures.
The weather department said the southwest monsoon had intensified, bringing rainfall to several places across Tamil Nadu and the neighbouring Union Territory of Puducherry.
One or two places in the remaining districts of Tamil Nadu, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal, are also likely to receive light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
The unsettled weather is expected to continue on Wednesday. The forecast indicated that isolated places in the Western Ghats districts could receive moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds.
Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Ranipet districts may also experience moderate rain with thunderstorms at one or two places on Wednesday.
The forecast offers some relief from the prevailing heat and humidity in several parts of the State. However, sudden spells of rain and gusty winds could disrupt traffic and other outdoor activities, particularly during the evening and night hours.
In Chennai, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy during the day. Thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rain are likely in some parts of the city and its suburbs towards the evening or at night.
Motorists have been urged to exercise caution as rain could lead to slippery roads, poor visibility and waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Fishermen and people undertaking outdoor work have also been advised to closely monitor weather updates.
The weather department is continuing to monitor monsoon conditions and has asked district administrations and the public to remain alert to localised thunderstorms, lightning and sudden strong winds.
Further updates will be issued if weather conditions intensify or warnings become necessary for any particular district. People have been advised to follow official alerts and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain, lightning or strong winds.
