Tèa Leoni to feature in 'Newlyweds'
Los Angeles, February 14
Tea Leoni is making her return to broadcast television and to the multi-camera comedy format with a starring role in NBC's pilot Newlyweds, co-created by Gail Lerner and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Landing Leoni, who had multiple pilot offers, firmed up Newlyweds' green light, which had been cast-contingent, clearing the project for production, as per Deadline.
Written by Gail Lerner, Newlyweds is a later-in-life romantic comedy centered on Jeanie (Tea Leoni), a free-spirited woman who impulsively marries a buttoned-up professor after a whirlwind courtship -- setting the stage for an unexpected and heartfelt new chapter together.
Lerner and Curtis executive produce alongside Eric Tannenbaum, Kim Tannenbaum, Scott Schwartz and Lionsgate Television. Leoni is a producer. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.
After a stint as the female lead on the short-lived Fox sitcom Flying Blind, Leoni headlined her own multi-camera comedy series, the 1995 The Naked Truth, which ran for three seasons, one on ABC and two on NBC.
Leoni went on to star in the CBS drama series Madam Secretary, which aired for six seasons. Since returning to acting a couple of years ago following a break, she did a season-long arc on the most recent fifth season of Hulu's Only Murders In the Building after first appearing in the Season 4 finale.
Newlyweds marks Tea Leoni's first return to multi-camera comedy since her stint on The Naked Truth.

Interesting to see a "later-in-life" romantic comedy. We need more stories about love and marriage beyond the 20s and 30s. Hope it's done well and doesn't rely on tired stereotypes. Good luck to the team!
Honestly, I'm a bit skeptical. Multi-camera comedies can feel very dated with their laugh tracks. Hope this one feels fresh. But with Jamie Lee Curtis involved, maybe it will have a good creative vision. Will give the pilot a chance.
The Naked Truth was such a fun show! Glad to see Tea Leoni returning to her roots. The cast and producers listed seem solid. Fingers crossed NBC gives it a proper chance and doesn't cancel it too quickly like they often do.
As someone who enjoyed Only Murders in the Building, it's cool to see her moving from a mystery to a comedy. Shows her range. The concept of an impulsive marriage is very relatable in our culture too! 😅 Hope it streams on Netflix or Prime in India soon.
