"I really struggled with...": Harry Styles reveals how Liam Payne's death changed his perspective on life

Harry Styles reveals his struggle with public grief and how Liam Payne's death changed his perspective on life and living fully.

"I really struggled with... acknowledging how strange it is to have people kind of like own part of your grief - Harry Styles"

Los Angeles, March 6

It has been over a year since former One Direction member Liam Payne passed away, leaving a deep void among his fans and friends. Singer Harry Styles, who still appears to be coping with Payne's passing, recently opened up about the loss of his former bandmate.

"I think there was a period when he (Liam Payne) passed away where I really struggled with kind of like acknowledging how strange it is to have people kind of like own part of your grief in a way. I have such strong feelings around my friend passing away. And then suddenly being, you know, like aware of there's maybe like a desire from other people of you to convey that in some way, or it means you're not feeling what you're feeling or something, you know?" Styles said in an interview, as quoted by Variety.

He also spoke about Payne's death in October 2024, which left him examining his own life.

"It's so difficult to lose a friend. It's difficult to lose any friend, but it's so difficult to lose a friend who is so like you in so many ways," the singer said, as he explained how he decided to live life to the fullest in a bid to honour his late friend.

Payne passed away in October 2024 after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina.

At that time, Harry Styles fondly remembered Payne's vibrant spirit, saying, "His greatest joy was making other people happy, and it was an honour to be alongside him as he did it. Liam lived wide open, with his heart on his sleeve... The years we spent together will forever remain among the most cherished years of my life."

On the work front for Harry Styles, the singer's upcoming one-night-only Manchester concert is set to go on Netflix.

Titled "Harry Styles. One Night in Manchester," the Netflix special is produced by Fulwell Entertainment.

Very sad news. Losing a friend, especially from such a young age, is a profound lesson. It reminds us of the Indian saying "Kal kya ho kisne jaana" (Who knows what tomorrow brings). We should all live more fully, like Harry says he's trying to do.

While I sympathize with his loss, I do feel the media coverage of celebrity deaths sometimes becomes excessive. The constant interviews and pressure to perform grief publicly must be incredibly hard. Let people mourn in peace.

My sister and I grew up listening to One Direction. Liam's passing felt like losing a part of our teenage years. Harry's honesty about his struggle is so important. Grief has no timeline, whether you're a global star or not.

A tragic reminder of how fragile life is, no matter how famous or successful you are. It's good he's channeling this into his art. Looking forward to the Netflix special—hope it's a fitting tribute.

"Liam lived wide open, with his heart on his sleeve" – what a beautiful way to remember a friend. In our fast-paced lives, we often forget to live with that kind of openness. A sobering lesson for all of us. 🙏
