Pat Cummins: Australia fell short in key moments as South Africa win 2-1

Pat Cummins admitted Australia could not capitalise on key moments after South Africa sealed a 2-1 Test series win at Newlands. Australia were bowled out for 111 chasing 288 in the final Test, with Simon Harmer taking six wickets. Cummins said the series ebbed and flowed but the hosts were better in the decisive moments.

"Really ebbed and flowed": Pat Cummins after Australia lose Test series 2-1 against South Africa

Cape Town, October 31

Australia captain Pat Cummins acknowledged that his side failed to capitalise on key moments during their 2-1 Test series defeat against South Africa, admitting that the hosts were better in crucial situations throughout the contest.

South Africa defeated Australia by 176 runs in the third and final Test at Newlands on Saturday to clinch the series after losing the opening match. Australia were bowled out for 111 while chasing a target of 288 on the final day, with Simon Harmer taking six wickets and Kagiso Rabada claiming three.

Reflecting on the series during the post-match presentation ceremony, Cummins said the contest had witnessed several momentum shifts. He pointed to Australia's strong start in the third Test but acknowledged that the team lost its advantage after a difficult third and fourth day.

"Really ebbed and flowed. We did brilliantly to take ten wickets on day one and gave ourselves a chance. Ending day three 4 for 40 in great position. Really tough day yesterday and made chasing today a tough task," Cummins said.

The Australia skipper also praised the team's ability to cope with the absence of players, while acknowledging that the visitors failed to make the most of their opportunities during the final-day chase.

"We have found people to step up in others' absence seamlessly. Trend of this game was once you got yourself in, runs were on offer. We didn't give ourselves a chance today. We're a really good side," he added.

Cummins described winning away from home against South Africa as a difficult challenge and said Australia had arrived with confidence but could not translate that belief into a series victory.

"Tough opponents away from home, that's difficult. We came here thinking we are good enough to win, but we weren't. Overall relatively happy. It comes down to the little moments. You wish you had the little moments - a catch went to hand or things like that. South Africa were better than us in those moments," Cummins concluded.

South Africa defeated Australia by 176 runs in the third and final Test at Newlands on Saturday. The hosts recovered from a 100-run first-innings deficit through centuries from Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder before Simon Harmer's 10-wicket match haul and Kagiso Rabada's three early strikes sealed the victory.

South Africa's 2-1 series victory marked another successful home campaign against Australia, with the hosts winning the final two Tests after losing the opening match.
