Rainfall situation is improving, emergency response teams are in place: Kerala State Disaster Management Authority official

Keralam remains on high alert following a spell of extremely heavy rainfall that lashed parts of the state, particularly the northern districts, over the last 48 hours. However, authorities have indicated that the intensity of the downpour is expected to subside in the coming days.
Speaking with ANI, Sekhar Lukose Kuriakose, Member Secretary of the Keralam State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), stated that emergency response teams are in place.
"We have experienced a strong spell of rain starting July 31 night, and yesterday also in the night we had extremely heavy rainfall recorded towards the north in the districts. The state is on high alert, and systems are in place to mitigate any events that are occurring. Rapid response teams are arranged. Emergency response teams are in place," Kuriakose told ANI.
The KSDMA official noted that the weather conditions are gradually stabilising.
"The rainfall situation is improving. Today the rain will be much less than yesterday and the day before, and it is going to continue coming down in terms of its intensity in the coming days," he said.
"If we look at the overall picture of water resources, we are probably in a deficit state. Most of our major reservoirs have less than 40% water. We have nine NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) teams available in the state. They have been deployed, pre-deployed," he added.
He said the Chief Minister reviews the situation on a daily basis and gives the necessary guidance and directions.

The water deficit in reservoirs is concerning though. If the rain is going to slow down, we might face a water shortage later. Balance is key—hope the authorities are thinking about that too.

The Chief Minister's daily review is a good sign of serious governance. But let's not forget that climate change is making such events more frequent. We need long-term infrastructure and urban planning, not just emergency responses. Just saying.

Reservoirs at less than 40% is worrying. But at least the rains are helping a bit. The real challenge will be managing the water resources properly once the rain stops. Hope the KSDMA has a plan for that as well.
The situation seems under control, but I still remember the devastation of 2018.
