Putin says India-Russia military collaboration built on mutual trust, hints at Su-57 offer
St. Petersburg, June 5
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that the India-Russia partnership extends beyond trade to joint development projects, and said it is built on mutual trust at a plenary session in St. Petersburg.
Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), which was moderated by India Today, Putin said that "India and Russia share a long-standing tradition of military collaboration built on mutual trust, adding that the partnership extends beyond trade to joint development projects."
He also noted that India has procured several aircraft and helicopters from Russia.
He said that the "Su-57 is among the most advanced platforms and has been offered to India," as reported by India Today.
He also cited the BrahMos missile programme, saying it is a key example of successful cooperation between Indian and Russian experts.
In the same plenary session, the Russian President also noted that India has never followed diktat from foreign nations.
"Naturally, India, which has never followed any diktat from abroad, or the People's Republic of China. Sovereignty and sovereign decision-making can never be contested," Putin said.
The Russian President said on Thursday that putting pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi is "detrimental to international relations and bilateral ties".
"Another thing is that the US are trying to put pressure on India in some matters. For example, when it comes to cooperation with Russia on some tracks, but everyone has understood that putting pressure on India's PM Narendra Modi, a country that has the largest population in the world, is detrimental for international relations and for bilateral relations, it doesn't matter where this pressure comes from," the Russian President highlighted.
Putin also praised India's talent pool and educational standards, at Friday's SPIEF plenary, describing relations between the two countries as being built on trust and brotherhood, India Today reported.
India and Russia share "very good, trust-based, brotherly relations in all senses of the word", he said at the plenary.
"We know how talented the Indian people are, how well-educated and competent they are. They have achieved worldwide renown, especially in coding," he added.

As someone from the West, I find this interesting. India is playing a smart game by balancing relationships with both Russia and the US. The BrahMos missile is a real success story. But I worry about Western sanctions potentially affecting these deals.
Putin's praise for Indian talent in coding is well-placed. Our IT professionals are world-class. But I hope this military collaboration also includes more technology transfer and joint manufacturing under Make in India. We don't want to just be buyers forever.
It's impressive that India maintains such strong ties with Russia despite US pressure. The Su-57 is a formidable platform. However, I do wonder about long-term maintenance and spare parts availability given the current geopolitical climate. India needs to diversify its defense partnerships.
"Brotherly relations" - that's a phrase you don't hear often in international diplomacy! 😊 The BrahMos example shows what we can achieve together. But we must also push for Russian investment in Indian defense manufacturing. Simply buying aircraft won't build our indigenous capability.
Interesting to hear Putin mention India never following foreign diktat. That's a powerful statement coming from a Russian leader. India's balancing act between major powers is impressive. I wonder though, how will this relationship evolve as India deepens its Quad partnership?
