"People voted above caste and religion, forming double-engine govt:" Uttarakhand CM Dhami on BJP's West Bengal victory

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami credits PM Modi's leadership for BJP's West Bengal victory, says people voted beyond caste and religion for development.

"Under the leadership of PM Modi, this is a victory of good governance and development, and the people there have voted above caste and religion, forming a double-engine government. - Pushkar Singh Dhami"

Dehradun, May 4

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has hailed the BJP's significant performance in the West Bengal elections, attributing the victory to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and the party's commitment to good governance and development.

Speaking on the election results to the reporters, CM Dhami emphasised that the people of West Bengal had voted beyond caste and religion, recognising the importance of a "double-engine government" for the state's progress.

"Under the leadership of PM Modi, this is a victory of good governance and development, and the people there have voted above caste and religion, forming a double-engine government," Dhami remarked.

He further added that the election outcome had also marked the complete ousting of the Congress party, which, according to him, has not returned to power in regions where it has been defeated.

Highlighting the importance of a strong government at both the state and central levels, Dhami noted, "The Congress party has been completely wiped out. Wherever Congress has been ousted from power, they haven't returned again. In the same way, people will prioritise double-engine governments. Double-engine governments will be elected."

The 2026 West Bengal Assembly election results have led to a dramatic political shift, ending Mamata Banerjee's long dominance and bringing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to power with a commanding 207 seats. This marks a major blow to the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), which secured only 80 seats, a steep decline from its previous stronghold.

Smaller parties, including Congress and CPI(M), remained marginal, with the BJP's 45.84% vote share edging out TMC's 40.80%.

The most significant upset came in Bhabanipur, where BJP's Suvendu Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee by 15,105 votes, marking a turning point in Bengal's political landscape.

CM Dhami is right that people voted above caste and religion, but let's be honest—this is also a huge mandate for Modi ji's vision. The TMC's divisive politics didn't work anymore. But I hope the BJP doesn't become complacent now. Governance needs to actually deliver for Bengal's poor and farmers.

As an outsider looking in, this is quite remarkable. Double-engine governments seem to be working in India's federal structure. But let's see if the BJP can actually handle Bengal's complex socio-economic issues—infrastructure, unemployment, and industrial revival. Big expectations now!

True that people voted for development over caste lines. But this 'double-engine' talk feels like a gimmick sometimes—what about states like Punjab or Kerala where BJP isn't in power? Good governance should work regardless. Still, happy to see Mamata's arrogance finally checked. Time for real change in Bengal!

I'm from Bengal and this is surreal. My family has always voted TMC, but this time we all switched. The law and order situation, the corruption, the appeasement—enough was enough. Suvendu defeating Mamata in her own constituency is not just a victory, it's a message: nobody is above the people. 🇮🇳

Interesting how 'voting above caste and religion' is praised, but many BJP supporters also use religious rhetoric. Let's see if this government actually focuses on secular governance or continues to polarize. Development is great, but civil liberties matter too. Fingers crossed for Bengal.
