Odisha: IMD forecasts intensified rainfall from Aug 29

The India Meteorological Department, Bhubaneswar, on Thursday said Odisha is likely to experience widespread rainfall over the next five to seven days under the influence of an active monsoon system and a developing low‑pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
IMD Director Manorama Mohanty said an upper air cyclonic circulation is currently extending from the lower to middle tropospheric levels. Under its influence, a low‑pressure area is likely to develop over the northwest Bay of Bengal around August 28-29, triggering widespread rainfall activity across the state.
Sharing details of the possible rainfall activity over the next 24 hours, Mohanty said light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely at many places, with isolated heavy rainfall expected in some districts.
The IMD issued an orange warning predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places in Baleshwar and Mayurbhanj districts during the next 24 hours. Mohanty added that rainfall activity is likely to intensify across several parts of Odisha from August 29, with heavy to very heavy rainfall possible in isolated locations.
Northern Odisha districts, in particular, are expected to receive significant rainfall during this period. The weather system is likely to remain active through the first few days of September, with widespread rainfall expected across many parts of the state. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely during this period.
The IMD has advised people to remain alert to weather warnings, particularly in areas likely to receive heavy rainfall, and to follow advisories issued by the local administration. The latest forecast indicates continued rainfall activity across Odisha in the coming days, with heavy‑rain warnings issued for several districts.
