Odisha CM holds meet with mine lease holders to ramp up iron ore production

Odisha CM Mohan Majhi meets industrialists to boost iron ore production, ensure regional development, and streamline the mine auction process.

"appealed to mine leaseholders to increase iron ore production in view of rapid industrialisation - CM Mohan Charan Majhi"

Bhubaneswar, April 7

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday appealed to mine leaseholders to increase iron ore production in view of rapid industrialisation in the state and the rising demand for iron ore in the country.

CM Majhi chaired a high-level meeting with mine leaseholders and industrialists to deliberate on boosting iron ore production in the state. The meeting, held at Lok Seva Bhavan here, the Chief Minister advised all the stakeholders to increase iron ore production in the state.

He assured the industrialists and industry representatives that the state government would provide full support for the meeting.

Discussions in the meeting focused on enhancing output in line with requirements, prioritising production and dispatch, while keeping in view the minimum mandatory limits stipulated under the Mine Development and Production Agreement (MDPA).

During the meeting, the Chief Minister noted that the number of industries in the state's mineral-rich districts is low. He urged industrialists to set up industries in these regions to promote balanced regional development.

He further stated that all necessary facilities and support would be provided by the state government to enhance iron ore production.

The Chief Minister also emphasised that industrialists should give special attention to ensure the availability of the basic amenities of residents in mining areas.

The Chief Minister said that a database is being prepared to provide information about land acquired in various districts for compensatory afforestation for the establishment of industries, enabling mine leaseholders and industrialists to know how much land is available in which district.

The state government has prepared an annual auction calendar for 2026-27 to expedite the mine auction process, and mineral blocks will be auctioned accordingly.

Good to see the CM focusing on balanced regional development. The mineral-rich districts need industries to create jobs locally. The database for compensatory afforestation land is a smart move for transparency.

Production increase is needed, but my main concern is for the people living in mining areas. The CM mentioned basic amenities, but will there be strict enforcement? Often, promises are made but the local communities bear the brunt of pollution and displacement. The government must walk the talk.

Excellent initiative! Odisha has immense potential. Increasing iron ore production will attract more investments and boost the 'Make in India' mission. The annual auction calendar will bring much-needed predictability for businesses. 👍

While boosting production is important for industrialization, I hope the focus on "minimum mandatory limits" doesn't become the standard. We should aim for best practices in sustainable mining, not just the legal minimums. The environmental cost is long-term.

Hope the new industries that are set up also focus on skill development for local youth. It's not just about land and ore, but about building a skilled workforce in Odisha for a sustainable future. Jai Odisha!
