Kathmandu, May 5

The Nepali government on Tuesday launched an online service for foreign tourists entering Nepal via land routes, allowing them to register their vehicles and pay fees digitally.

The move aims to facilitate the entry of Indian tourists and other foreign visitors travelling to Nepal via India.

Nepal's Finance Minister, Swarnim Wagle, inaugurated the system introduced by the Department of Customs.

With the new system in place, Indian tourists and third-country visitors entering Nepal with their own vehicles can now complete registration and pay applicable fees online.

Previously, such vehicles had to obtain temporary permits physically at customs points.

Earlier, travellers also had to revisit customs offices to renew permits during their stay or face penalties if they failed to do so on time.

Now, tourists can apply for permits and make payments online from home, making travel to Nepal more convenient.

Launching the service, Finance Minister Wagle said the new system would eliminate hassles faced by tourists at border points.

"This initiative is part of the government's commitment to good governance and efficient public service delivery. We want tourists to face no difficulties and receive fast, quality services," he added.

Director General of the Department of Customs, Shyam Prasad Mainali, said that permits for foreign tourist vehicles entering Nepal have now been fully digitised.

"Travellers can self-declare vehicle details online, making the process more transparent and efficient," he added.

Tourist vehicles can pay the required fees either online or through bank counters.

Vehicles that pay online will receive a QR code via email, which can be presented at customs for entry into Nepal.

The department said vehicles carrying the QR code can travel to their destinations without hassle.

If the permitted duration expires, tourists can extend their stay online from within Nepal.

To access the service, users need to visit the Department of Customs website, click on the "Our Services" section, and select the "TIV" module to fill in details online.

After completing the process, a QR code is issued, which must be used to pay the applicable fee and gain entry.

According to the department, the Temporary Import of Vehicle (TIV) module has been developed under Nepal's National Single Window System to ease entry for foreign nationals.

Good initiative but they should also allow payment through UPI or Indian payment apps. Many Indian tourists don't have international credit cards. Still, baby steps - at least the physical permit hassle is gone.

This is real digital transformation in SAARC region. Nepal is becoming more traveler-friendly day by day. Last year when I went to Lumbini, the permit renewal was such a headache. Now online extension is a blessing.

Nice move but what about internet connectivity at border points? Many of us don't have good mobile data at Raxaul or Sunauli. Paper backups should still be available for those who can't access online services.

As a frequent traveler between India-Nepal, this is a welcome change. The temporary permit system was so outdated. But seriously Nepal, please also work on road conditions near border areas - that's the real pain point for Indian tourists.

Great step towards ease of doing tourism. But I wonder if there's a language barrier - the portal should have Hindi option too. Many Indian tourists from Bihar and UP are not comfortable with English or Nepali interfaces.
