Work on India's first high-speed rail corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad is progressing steadily, with 343 km of viaduct construction and 434 km of pier work already completed out of the total 508 km alignment, according to an update shared by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited.

Providing a progress update as of March 29, 2026, NHSRCL said that key structural works along the corridor have advanced significantly. "Out of 508 km, 343 km viaduct and 434 km pier work has been completed," the corporation said.

The update also noted that several bridge works along the route have been finished. "17 river bridges, 05 PSC (pre-stressed concrete) and 13 steel bridges completed," NHSRCL said.

Work related to safety infrastructure has also progressed across a large stretch of the corridor. According to the corporation, "More than 5.6 lakh noise barriers installed along 280 km of stretch."

Track infrastructure is also moving ahead steadily. NHSRCL said, "360 track km (180 route km) of RC track bed construction completed."

The electrification work has also seen notable progress along the mainline viaduct. "More than 6900 OHE masts installed covering approx. 159 route km of the mainline viaduct," the update added.

Tunnel construction in Maharashtra has also reached key milestones. NHSRCL said, "Out of the seven mountain tunnels in Palghar district, Maharashtra, breakthrough achieved for two mountain tunnels."

The corporation also shared details about the underground tunnel between Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Shilphata. "5 km of NATM tunnel out of 21 km of tunnel between BKC and Shilphata (in Maharashtra) is excavated," it said.

Explaining the work underway inside the tunnel, NHSRCL said that excavation has already been completed for part of the stretch, and further structural work is in progress.

"India's first bullet train corridor includes a 21-kilometre tunnel. Five kilometers of this tunnel, built using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), have been fully excavated," the corporation said.

"With excavation complete, work has now advanced to the next stages of tunnel construction," it added.

According to the corporation, multiple systems are now being installed to ensure the safety of the underground section. "Inside the tunnel, the drainage system is being constructed using a Drainage Casting Gantry -- ensuring that all seepage water is safely collected and channelled away through a dedicated drainage system for the tunnel," NHSRCL said.

The waterproofing work has also begun inside the tunnel. "Waterproofing gantries then install specialised membranes, creating a protective barrier that seals the tunnel against water ingress," the corporation said.

Talking about the structural strengthening, NHSRCL said, "Reinforcement bar cages are being prepared and installed along the tunnel profile, forming the steel framework that strengthens the final concrete lining."

The corporation further added that the final lining work will give the tunnel its everlasting strength. "The Lining Gantry follows, casting the final concrete lining that gives the tunnel its permanent structural strength and smooth finish."

Alongside tunnel construction, key infrastructure facilities for operations are also being built. "Dedicated equipment rooms are also being developed to house the critical systems required for operations and maintenance," NHSRCL said.

Other project components are also progressing simultaneously. According to the update, "Construction of rolling stock depots at Surat and Ahmedabad are in progress."

Station construction in Gujarat has also reached an advanced stage. "Superstructure work on all stations in Gujarat is at advanced stage," NHSRCL said.

In Maharashtra, work has begun on key station infrastructure as well. "Work has started on all three elevated stations and slab casting work at Mumbai underground station in Maharashtra is in progress," the corporation added.

"With each stage progressing steadily, the underground section of India's first bullet train Project moves closer to completion," NHSRCL said.

As someone who travels frequently between these cities for work, this will be a game-changer. The noise barrier installation along 280 km shows they are considering local communities. My only respectful criticism: I hope the final ticket pricing is kept reasonable so it's accessible to more than just the elite.

Bahut badhiya! The engineering details are impressive - NATM tunneling, drainage systems, waterproofing. This is nation-building at its best. Hope they maintain this momentum and complete it on schedule. The economic boost for both Maharashtra and Gujarat will be tremendous.

Good to see concrete progress. But I'm more concerned about the final cost and who will bear it. Also, will this benefit the common man or just become another luxury service? The depots at Surat and Ahmedabad are a good sign for local employment though.
