Monsoon onset brings relief: Rain lashes parts of Delhi

New Delhi, July 2

Rain lashed parts of the national capital on Thursday night, bringing relief from prevailing heat conditions, while the India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR, forecasting cloudy skies, moderate rain spells and strong surface winds.

According to the IMD, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature between 33°C and 34.8°C on Wednesday, marking a significant drop from earlier heatwave conditions. The weather department has also forecast Thursday's maximum temperature to remain in the range of 32°C to 34°C, along with light rain and gusty winds.

Meanwhile, IMD officials said the monsoon is expected to advance further into several parts of North India in the coming days. A yellow alert has been issued for parts of western and central India due to expected heavy rainfall.

Senior IMD scientist Naresh Yadav said the monsoon will soon cover additional areas including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh and parts of Gujarat's west coast. He warned that extremely heavy rainfall is likely over the Konkan region, Goa and South Gujarat in the next four to five days, adding that a red alert has been issued for these areas.

He further stated that very heavy rainfall is also expected over Odisha and central India.

In Chandigarh, IMD Director Surinder Paul confirmed that the monsoon has already reached parts of Punjab and Haryana, with rainfall reported from several districts. He said the system will progress further and is likely to cover the remaining regions within the next two to three days, bringing widespread showers and relief from heat and humidity.

As someone who moved to Delhi from the US last year, this weather is shocking! The heat was like an oven, but now this rain feels like heaven. I'm glad IMD is keeping everyone informed properly. Just hope the city's drainage system can handle it this time.

Good news for Delhi, but I'm more concerned about the red alert for Konkan and Gujarat. Heavy rainfall there can cause landslides and disrupt normal life. IMD should coordinate better with state governments for evacuation plans. Climate change is real and we need better infrastructure.

Monsoon is such a blessing after those 45°C days! 🌧️ We were sweating like anything. My AC finally got a break. But yaar, the traffic jams in Delhi during rain are a nightmare - waterlogging everywhere. Hope MCD is ready with pumps this time.

Interesting to see how the monsoon progresses. I'm in Gurugram and we got some drizzle but not much. The IMD's yellow alert is helpful for planning the week ahead. Hopefully the rain spreads across all of NCR properly and we don't face that heat again.

One thing I don't like about monsoon in Delhi - the humidity! It becomes like a pressure cooker even after rain. But I'll take this over the heatwave any day. Just wish our civic bodies would fix the potholes before the rains come. Accidents increase a lot during this season.
