Michael Fassbender, who is known for portraying the role of Magneto in X-Men, is in negotiations to join the 'Brutalist' director Brady Corbet in his next mystery film, reported Variety.

According to Variety, the film is rumoured to be called 'The Origin of the World'. It marks Corbet's follow-up to his highly acclaimed 2024 epic 'The Brutalist', which landed 10 Oscar nominations, including actor for Adrien Brody, cinematography and original score.

Little is officially known about the project. Speaking in late 2025, the director said that it would be an X-rated movie that took place mostly in the 1970s.

"The film spans from the 19th century into the present day, it's just predominantly focused on the '70s. The film is really, really genre-defying," he said as quoted by Variety. It's also reportedly being shot using very rare eight-perf 65mm cameras.

David Kaplan and Andrew Morrison will produce the film under their Kaplan Morrison production banner.

According to the outlet, Fassbender is currently in Cannes with the South Korean sci-fi thriller "Hope" by Na Hong-jin, starring alongside Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon, Taylor Russell, Cameron Britton and Alicia Vikander.

He most recently starred in Steven Soderbergh's espionage thriller 'Black Bag' and Irish hit 'Kneecap' on the big screen and the Paramount+ spy series 'The Agency: Central Intelligence.'

This film will mark Corbet's fourth feature as a director following 'The Childhood of a Leader,' 'Vox Lux,' and 'The Brutalist.'

He also produced last year's 'The Testament of Ann Lee,' directed by his partner Mona Fastvold, with whom he also co-wrote most of his films.

"The Origin of the World" sounds intriguing. I hope it's a gripping thriller about beginnings. Fassbender in a 1970s setting? Could be really cool. The 65mm camera is a nice touch for Hollywood, but I'd love to see our Indian directors also push boundaries with tech.

Honestly, Brady Corbet is overrated. 'The Brutalist' was good but not that great. Fassbender deserves better scripts than this vague mystery. And X-rated? In India, even kissing scenes get censored. We are far behind in artistic freedom. Western cinema has its issues but at least they take risks. 😐

I love Fassbender since 'X-Men' and 'Steve Jobs'. This could be interesting. The 70s vibe mixed with mystery sounds like a treat for cinephiles. But I hope the "X-rated" part is just artistic, not gratuitous. We need more intelligent cinema in India too, not just masala films. ✨

Fassbender is a great pick for Corbet's style. 'The Brutalist' was a masterpiece. I'm curious about this genre-defying claim. Using rare 65mm cameras shows commitment. But I wish Hollywood also focused more on stories from other cultures. Indian cinema has so many untold stories waiting. 🌍

Another Fassbender project! He's really busy. But why always these dark, mysterious roles? Would love to see him in a comedy or light-hearted film. Also, 10 Oscar nominations for 'The Brutal
