Meeting record 8,748 MW power demand without breakdowns is our real achievement: Delhi Minister Ashish Sood

New Delhi, June 29

Delhi successfully met its highest-ever peak power demand of 8,748 MW on Monday, surpassing the previous record of 8,656 MW, with no major power outages or transmission failures, Delhi government's Power Minister Ashish Sood said.

In a statement, Sood said the Capital's power network handled the unprecedented demand seamlessly, attributing the achievement to the government's Power Master Plan and sustained investments in strengthening the transmission and distribution infrastructure.

"Today, Delhi made history by successfully meeting an all-time high peak power demand of 8,748 MW, shattering the previous record of 8,656 MW recorded on June 19, 2024," the minister said.

He said the city's uninterrupted power supply during the record demand reflected the resilience of the electricity network.

"The real achievement today is not just the record-breaking numbers, but the fact that the entire city functioned normally. Our robust power network held strong with zero breakdowns or major infrastructure failures. Such milestones often go unnoticed because the lights stay on, and that is the ultimate validation of our efforts," Sood said.

The minister said the achievement marked a departure from the power infrastructure challenges faced in previous years and credited the current government's planning and execution for ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply.

"This historic execution is the direct result of our government's meticulous Power Master Plan and sustained investments in upgrading Delhi's transmission and distribution grid. It is an example of proactive and effective governance focused on delivering uninterrupted 24x7 power to every citizen of the National Capital," he added.

According to the release, Delhi's power network successfully managed the record demand without any major infrastructure failures despite the heavy load on the transmission system.

The figure today surpassed the previous all-time high of 8,656 MW recorded on June 19, 2024, according to the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC).

The latest peak is 92 MW higher than the previous record and 306 MW above the highest demand recorded in 2025, when the capital's peak power demand touched 8,442 MW on June 12, 2025.

Great to see the grid holding up. But let's also remember that a lot of this demand is due to inefficient appliances and poor building insulation. We need to push for energy efficiency too, not just supply.

My AC didn't flicker even once during peak hours. That's a huge relief after the nightmare we faced a few years ago. Well done, Delhi govt! 👏👏

It's nice that they met the demand, but why is the peak so high in the first place? We need better urban planning and green building codes to reduce the load, not just manage it.

This is what happens when you have a proper plan and execute it. No drama, no excuses. Just lights on. Other states should take note. 😊

Good news, but I'm still skeptical about the long-term. The grid is aging, and we're adding more ACs every year. Hope they keep investing in upgrades, not just celebrating a record.

Finally, some good news! Our area used to have regular outages, but this summer has been smooth. Thank you to the unsung heroes working behind the scenes. 🙏
