Delhi L-G Sandhu discusses traffic management with top cops
New Delhi, June 29
Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu on Monday discussed traffic management in the capital with senior police officers, finalising strategies for area-specific solutions using intelligent traffic management systems and preventing illegal parking.
After the meeting, the Lieutenant Governor said in a message on X, "Reviewed a detailed presentation by @dtptraffic today, along with @CPDelhi and senior officials."
"It is encouraging to see the focused efforts and strategic interventions being undertaken to improve traffic management across Delhi. Targeted action to address major congestion points, combined with continuous engineering interventions and technology-driven solutions, has begun to deliver incremental improvements," said Sandhu.
He said, "Strict enforcement against violations such as wrong-side driving and unauthorised parking must remain a sustained priority."
"It is also encouraging to see the citizen-centric Project Sangam being taken forward to strengthen engagement with local residents and develop area-specific solutions. Directed the team to sustain this momentum with a continued focus on future-ready infrastructure, intelligent traffic management systems, and the adoption of advanced technologies," he said.
"Assured @dtptraffic of our full support in its ongoing efforts to deliver a seamless, safe, and efficient mobility experience for every citizen of Delhi," Sandhu said.
Earlier, the Lieutenant Governor reviewed mobility and digital traffic management issues with senior officials, stressing the need to scale up the use of AI and community participation for congestion-free roads.
During his interaction with the Delhi Traffic Police personnel, the L-G underlined their critical role in positioning the city as a global hub for investment and tourism-seamless mobility, a statement said.
In a post on social media platform X, L-G Sandhu said, "A productive session at the Todapur facility of @dtptraffic today. Reviewed progress of the Digital Enforcement framework and stressed scaling up Artificial Intelligence for 24/7 transparent monitoring and scientific management of peak-hour traffic."
"Traffic snarls not only waste time and fuel but also worsen pollution. Emphasised greater on-ground visibility of traffic police, especially at congestion hotspots, to ensure smoother flow and act as a deterrent," he noted.
"Underlined the critical role of Delhi Traffic Police in positioning Delhi as a global hub for investment and tourism-seamless mobility is key to competitiveness. Highlighted traffic management as a shared responsibility: Resident Welfare Associations as key partners in local traffic and parking solutions and Youth engagement for tech-driven, practical inputs," the L-G said.
Sandhu noted that he also reiterated the commitment to transforming Delhi's mobility through advanced technology and active community participation for a smarter and safer national capital.

Good to see the L-G taking traffic seriously. I'm an expat working in Gurgaon but I drive through Delhi often. The difference between Delhi and other global cities is the lack of discipline on the road. If they can enforce no wrong-side driving strictly, that alone would cut congestion by 30%. Let's see if this translates to real action on the ground.
L-G sahab is saying all the right things—AI, community participation, strict enforcement. But bhai, we've heard these promises before. I travel from Dwarka to Connaught Place daily and it takes me 2 hours each way. The real issue is the sheer number of vehicles and poor public transport integration. Unless they coordinate with DTC and Delhi Metro, traffic won't improve much. Still, good intentions, let's hope for the best 🙏
Very impressed with the focus on 'Project Sangam' and resident engagement. We in our RWA in South Delhi are already working with traffic police on a local parking plan. But the L-G should also look at the condition of footpaths and cycle lanes—pedestrians and cyclists are completely neglected in Delhi. A 'smart' city should be inclusive for all modes of transport, not just cars. Good step though, keep it up!
I appreciate the L-G's enthusiasm, but a respectful criticism: we need more than just meetings and social media posts. The traffic situation in Delhi is a crisis—people waste hours every day. AI and tech are great, but what about basic things like proper road markings, synchronized traffic signals, and enough traffic cops on the ground? Also, why no mention of tackling the VIP culture that causes sudden road closures? That's a major congestion source. Hope the Delhi Police walks the talk this time.
