Massive Tourist Rush Paralyzes Dehradun-Mussoorie Route; Police Deploy 4 Super Zones

A massive influx of tourists from Delhi and NCR has caused heavy traffic congestion on the Dehradun-Mussoorie route due to summer vacation and weekend rush. Dehradun Police has implemented a special traffic management plan dividing the area into four super zones, 10 zones, and 19 sectors. Circle Officer (Traffic) Ankit Kandari stated that personnel have been deployed at all major intersections and junctions to regulate traffic. Drone teams and CCTV surveillance are being used to monitor congestion in real time and alert traffic units.

Massive tourist influx causes heavy traffic on Dehradun-Mussoorie route; Police divides city into 4 super zones

Dehradun, June 7

A massive influx of tourists travelling to Mussoorie from Delhi and the National Capital Region due to the ongoing summer vacation in schools and the weekend rush has led to heavy traffic congestion on the Dehradun-Mussoorie route, prompting police to implement a special traffic management plan.

According to officials, similar traffic conditions have been witnessed every weekend over the past three to four weeks due to increased tourist footfall and the ongoing Char Dham Yatra.

To manage the growing traffic pressure, Dehradun Police has implemented a special traffic management plan, under which routes for vehicles travelling to and from Dehradun and Mussoorie have been divided into four super zones, 10 zones, and 19 sectors.

Speaking to ANI, Circle Officer (Traffic) Ankit Kandari said on Sunday that police personnel have been deployed extensively to regulate traffic movement.

"Considering the traffic from Dehradun, Mussoorie and the Char Dham Yatra, we have divided the entire Dehradun area into four super zones, 10 zones and 19 sectors. Officers of the rank of CO, Inspector and SI have been deployed to oversee these zones and super zones, and personnel have been stationed at all major intersections, junctions and entry points," Kandari said.

He said staff have been deployed in morning and evening shifts, and parking sites have also been inspected.

"We urge tourists to park their vehicles only at designated parking areas and to follow the prescribed routes," he said.

Kandari further said drone teams and CCTV surveillance are being used in both Mussoorie and Dehradun to monitor congestion in real time.

"We have deployed drone teams in both Mussoorie and Dehradun. Our teams monitor areas with heavy traffic using drones and CCTV cameras. These teams immediately alert the traffic and local police units," he added.

Was stuck in that jam last Saturday, took 5 hours just from Dehradun to Mussoorie! 😤 The drone monitoring is a good idea but they need to enforce parking rules strictly. Too many people park anywhere on the roadside and block everything.

Nice to see the police being proactive with drones and CCTV. But honest question – why not promote alternative routes or even a shuttle service from Dehradun? Everyone ends up taking their own car and clogging the roads. Also Char Dham Yatra adds to the chaos. Gujarat and Uttarakhand are beautiful but need better infrastructure planning.

The super zone plan is a good move. But let's not forget that many tourists don't follow basic rules – they stop in the middle of the road for photos, park at no-parking spots, and then blame police for the jam. 🚫 We need stricter fines. Also, people going to Char Dham should plan their trips better!

Living in Dehradun, I've seen this get worse every year. The 4 super zones might help for now, but what about long-term solutions? Maybe time-slot entry to Mussoorie or a QR-based system? Just my two paise. 😊 At least they're using tech like drones and CCTV. Better than nothing.
