Maharashtra signs MoUs for Rs 6.5 lakh crore nuclear energy projects, targets 25,400 MW power generation
Mumbai, May 19
Maharashtra on Tuesday signed Memorandums of Understanding with multiple companies for nuclear power generation projects aimed at boosting clean energy capacity and supporting India's goal of becoming an energy-rich nation with zero carbon emissions.
The agreements were signed between the state government and NTPC Ltd, Adani Power, Reliance Industries Limited and Lalitpur Power Generation Company Limited (Bajaj Group) during a meeting held at Mantralaya in Mumbai.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Maharashtra is making consistent efforts to contribute to the national clean energy mission and highlighted the importance of nuclear energy in achieving long-term energy goals.
"Maharashtra is making every possible effort to contribute to the fulfillment of this objective," he said.
He added that the state government will extend full support to companies investing in the sector. "The State Government would extend its full cooperation to companies interested in investing in the nuclear power generation sector within the state," he said.
According to the agreements, Adani Power will invest Rs 1.50 lakh crore to generate 6,000 MW of power and create around 12,000 direct and indirect jobs, while Reliance Industries will invest Rs 2 lakh crore for 7,200 MW generation capacity and over 1 lakh jobs. NTPC Ltd will invest Rs 1 lakh crore with an expected capacity of 7,200 MW.
The state government said the overall MoUs are expected to result in 25,400 MW of nuclear power generation and create around 1,23,500 jobs with a total investment of Rs 6.5 lakh crore.

Nuclear energy is efficient and reliable - not dependent on monsoon like hydro or sun like solar. But we need strict safety measures. Remember Fukushima? India's nuclear regulators must be absolutely independent and transparent. Also, what about nuclear waste disposal? That's still a challenge globally.
Finally some real action on clean energy! But I'm skeptical about Adani and Reliance - their track records on environmental compliance aren't great. Need proper oversight. Also, Rs 6.5 lakh crore is a lot - hope this doesn't mean electricity tariffs will go up for common people. We already pay through our noses for power.
Great to see Maharashtra leading the way! But a respectful criticism - nuclear projects take 10-15 years to complete. Our energy needs are urgent today. Why not fast-track solar and wind too? And where exactly will these plants be located? Coastal areas? That raises concerns for fishing communities. Need proper public consultation.
This is exactly the kind of investment India needs to meet its climate goals. Nuclear is the only reliable baseload clean power. But I hope the technology used is modern Generation III+ or IV reactors, not old designs. And the jobs estimate of 1.23 lakh sounds optimistic - construction jobs are temporary, operational jobs are fewer. Let's be realistic about employment projections.
As someone living near Tarapur, I can tell you nuclear plants bring both benefits and fears. Jobs are good but we need proper evacuation plans and health monitoring for nearby residents. Also, Maharashtra already has the highest power tariffs - hope this investment eventually brings down costs. Jai Maharashtra! 🌿
