Madhya Pradesh cabinet to meet today, likely to approve Uniform Civil Code bill draft
Bhopal, July 19
A special cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will be held today at Jagdishpur, a Bhopal town formerly known as Islamnagar. The draft of the Uniform Civil Code bill is expected to be approved during the cabinet meeting.
Once cleared, the proposed draft for the UCC bill is expected to be introduced in the state assembly during the Monsoon Session, which would begin on July 20.
Necessary arrangements for the special cabinet meeting have been completed at the venue.
Earlier on Friday, addressing a gathering in Katni district, Mohan Yadav had stated that the bill would be given a nod at a special cabinet meeting to be held in Jagdishpur and then it would be introduced during the upcoming Monsoon Session of the state assembly.
"We are moving ahead with the principle of 'One Nation, One Law' in the upcoming Monsoon Session. Therefore, before taking this proposed legislation (UCC) to the Legislative Assembly for its passage, we will approve it in Jagdishpur, which was once the old capital of Bhopal state. Its name had been changed to Islampur by invaders, but it has now been restored to Jagdishpur. It is there that we will approve this bill (UCC)," CM Yadav said.
"When there should be one nation, one Constitution, one head and one flag, why should there be separate laws for Hindus and Muslims? ....Under the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC), only a person who has one marriage will have the legal right to reside in Madhya Pradesh," the Chief Minister said.

This is a complex issue with many cultural and religious sensitivities. While I understand the intent behind uniformity, we need to ensure that this doesn't trample on the rights of minorities or disrupt family structures that have been in place for centuries. The CM's statement about only allowing those with one marriage to reside in MP is particularly concerning - is that even constitutional? Needs more debate before being rushed through.
Great move by CM Yadav! The fact that they're holding the meeting at Jagdishpur (formerly Islamnagar) is symbolic too - reclaiming our heritage. Uniform Civil Code will empower women across all communities and ensure justice. No more separate laws for separate people. This is the way forward for a progressive India! 💪
Honestly, I'm skeptical. Every time UCC is brought up, it feels more like a political move to polarise voters than genuine legal reform. The CM's comments about "only one marriage" and linking it to residency rights sound more like rhetoric than well-thought-out policy. Let's see the actual draft first before celebrating. Actions speak louder than words.
As a woman, I welcome this wholeheartedly! Uniform laws for marriage, divorce, inheritance - this will protect women from discriminatory practices across religions. No more being treated like second-class citizens under the name of personal laws. Let's hope other states follow MP's lead. Jai Hind! 🚀
Good intentions but bad execution so far. The CM's speech seems to target a particular community. UCC should be about legal equality, not about renaming towns or making political statements. Also, this is
