Jaipur, July 1
Lieutenant General Mohit Malhotra has assumed the appointment of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the South Western Command.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the General Officer, commissioned into the 47 Armoured Regiment in June 1989, brings to this appointment over thirty-seven years of distinguished service, spanning command, staff and instructional appointments at every significant level.
Immediately prior to assuming command, he served as Chief of Staff, Headquarters Eastern Command, where he made substantial contributions to operational preparedness, organisational effectiveness and institutional cohesion, the ministry further said.
His command experience spans some of the Army's most demanding operational environments, including the Siachen Glacier, an Armoured Regiment, an Independent Armoured Brigade, an Armoured Division and the Desert Corps. Beyond command, he has an extensive military profile with exposure in key staff appointments spanning operational planning, military intelligence, operational logistics, personnel management, technology absorption and strategic communications.
A scholar-soldier of high distinction, Lieutenant General Malhotra holds two Master's Degrees in Defence Studies, including one from Kings College, London, in addition to two MPhil degrees in Political Science & Defence and Strategic Studies. Impressive credentials, no doubt. But I wonder - with such a highly decorated officer taking command of the Desert Corps (which guards our western borders near Pakistan), does this signal any specific strategic shift? Or is this just routine rotation? Either way, best wishes to the General.
As an Indian living abroad, articles like this make me proud. The level of professionalism and dedication in our military leadership is world-class. Two MPhils alongside operational command experience is rare globally. Jai Hind!
My father served in the Armoured Corps, and I know what it takes to lead men in tanks across the desert. That too after commanding in Siachen - the highest battlefield on earth. Hats off to Lt Gen Malhotra. The nation is in safe hands.
One small concern though - he topped almost all courses he attended, which is excellent, but I hope the Army is also promoting officers who have experience with modern tech like drones and cyber warfare. Need a mix of old-school grit and new-age thinking. Otherwise, solid appointment.
Siachen to desert - that is one hell of a range of experience! And his academic background is mind-blowing. Kings College London plus two MPhils... these days our Generals are not just warriors but intellectuals too. This is the future of military leadership.
