World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated annually on 5 June and encourages awareness and action to protect the environment.

It is supported by many non-governmental organisations, businesses, and government entities, and represents the primary United Nations outreach day supporting the environment.

First held in 1973, it has been a platform for raising awareness on environmental issues such as marine pollution, overpopulation, global warming, sustainable development, and wildlife crime.

World Environment Day is a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually, including Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, and the United States.

Every year, the programme provides a theme and forum for businesses, non-government organisations, communities, politicians, and stars to advocate environmental causes.

World Environment Day is nice but where is the action on ground? Our rivers in Kashmir are getting polluted, deforestation is real, and the lake ecosystems are dying. We need specific targets, not just statements. Also, why isn't there more focus on renewable energy in the region? J&K has huge potential for hydropower.

As someone who grew up in Srinagar, I can tell you the environmental degradation is painful to watch. Dal Lake is shrinking, the floating gardens are disappearing, and plastic waste is everywhere. I'm glad both leaders are making this a priority. Let's hope it's not just photo-ops and actually leads to a cleaner, greener Kashmir! 🏔️

Respect to both leaders for this initiative. But here's the thing - when I visited Sonmarg last year, I saw tourists throwing garbage everywhere. We need more public awareness and strict fines for littering. Also, why is there so much construction in eco-sensitive areas? Let's protect what's left of our natural heritage.

Beautiful to see unity on such an important issue! 🌍 As a student of environmental science, I appreciate the acknowledgment that conservation needs collective effort. But can we have concrete measures like banning single-use plastics strictly, planting native species, and restoring wetlands? J&K's biodiversity is too precious to lose. Hope this isn't just another statement!
