Kevin Pietersen's IPL 2026 Playoff Picks: MI, DC, RR, Punjab in Top 4

Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has predicted Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, and Punjab Kings as his top four playoff teams for IPL 2026 after the first round of matches. He excluded the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, citing concerns over their middle order and Josh Hazlewood's fitness. Pietersen emphasized that the toss has become extremely important this season, as no target seems safe with teams chasing 200-plus totals easily. IPL 2026: Kevin Pietersen predicts top 4 teams after first round matches

Kevin Pietersen names his top 4 IPL 2026 playoff contenders, excluding RCB, and explains his picks based on early season observations.

"Having watched the first round of matches... this could be the top 4. MI, DC, RR, PUNJAB. - Kevin Pietersen"

New Delhi, April 3

Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has made an early prediction of the four teams that can make it into the playoffs of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 after watching the first round matches, where every franchise played a minimum of one match.

The former Delhi Capitals mentor feels that the Mumbai Indians (MI), Delhi Capitals (DC), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) could face each other in the playoffs. He also added that unexpected player injuries could change these standings.

"Having watched the first round of matches in the IPL this season, as it stands, just on observations, this could be the top 4. MI, DC, RR, PUNJAB. This can all change with injuries, etc., but that's how I see it atm," Pietersen wrote in a post on X.

The biggest exclusion from his playoffs list is the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who started off their campaign with a dominant win against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). According to Pietersen, RCB's middle order form and Hazelwood's fitness are the main reasons behind keeping the 2025 champions out.

"My concern with RCB is their middle overs and spinners. And Hazlewood's fitness. Remember - bowlers win you championships," He wrote on X.

Pietersen also feels that no target is safe in this season after seeing RCB and Mumbai Indians chasing 200 plus total easily. According to him, toss has become very important.

"The mad thing, though, about this season, is batters don't know how hard to go in the first innings. What's a good score? Averaging it out, can you actually win most of your games batting first?

"The toss is as important as your team!" he added.

According to the 45-year-old, five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK), three-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and 2016 title winners Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have to do something extraordinary and bring massive change to be title contenders.

"Something would have to change massively for me to consider CSK/SRH/KKR as title contenders," he wrote in another post on X.

Meanwhile, after six matches Rajasthan Royals are at the top spot in the points table with a massive 4.171 net run rate, while the RCB sits at the second position. Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians also have two points after winning their opening matches. Hyderabad also opened their account after defeating KKR in their second match.

As a CSK fan, I respectfully disagree. One bad match and we're written off? Thala's team always finds a way. The season is a marathon, not a sprint. Let's see where we are after 7 games.

He's spot on about the toss being crucial. With these flat pitches and small boundaries, chasing 200+ is becoming normal. Captains winning the toss are almost choosing to field first without a second thought.

Finally, some recognition for Punjab Kings! 😄 Our team looks balanced this year. Good to see an expert notice the potential. Hope they can maintain this consistency.

His point about RCB's middle order and spin is valid. They chased well, but what happens if the top order fails? The real test is yet to come. Other teams will study their weaknesses.

Interesting analysis from Pietersen. As an outsider, I think he's right to highlight RR. They have a fantastic, well-rounded squad. But writing off KKR so early seems premature. They have match-winners.
