IMD forecasts rain across parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry

IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry until Friday, offering temporary relief before temperatures rise again.

"The rainfall recorded on the previous day had already contributed to a noticeable dip in temperatures in several parts of the state. - Officials"

Chennai, April 7

Chennai is likely to receive moderate rainfall on Tuesday, according to the India Meteorological Department, as a low-pressure system persists over the region stretching from Telangana to the Gulf of Mannar via Tamil Nadu.

The prevailing weather system is expected to bring intermittent rainfall across parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry over the next few days. The Meteorological Department has forecast that several areas in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry may experience light to moderate rainfall until Friday.

The influence of the low-pressure system is likely to sustain cloud cover and localised showers, particularly in coastal and interior districts.

Looking ahead to the weekend, weather conditions are expected to vary across regions. The Western Ghat districts of Tamil Nadu are likely to receive moderate rainfall on Saturday and Sunday, while the delta districts may witness light showers at isolated locations.

Officials noted that these changes are part of a broader transitional weather pattern typically observed during this period.

In Chennai and its suburban areas, moderate rainfall is expected to provide temporary relief from the recent heat. However, despite the rain activity, temperatures across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are projected to gradually rise by up to 3 degrees Celsius in the coming days, indicating a return to warmer conditions.

The rainfall recorded on the previous day had already contributed to a noticeable dip in temperatures in several parts of the state. Nevertheless, a few districts continued to experience intense heat. Erode registered the highest temperature at 40 degrees Celsius, followed closely by Karur Paramathi at 39.4 degrees. Vellore and Tirupattur also recorded scorching temperatures of around 38.3 degrees, highlighting the persistence of summer heat in interior regions.

Meteorologists have advised residents to remain cautious of sudden weather changes, including brief spells of rain accompanied by gusty winds in certain areas.

While the showers are expected to bring short-term relief, the overall warming trend suggests that summer conditions will continue to dominate across much of the state.

Authorities continue to monitor the evolving weather system and have urged the public to stay updated with official forecasts, especially in regions prone to sudden rainfall and temperature fluctuations.

Good news for the farmers in the delta districts. Light showers can help the standing crops. But the forecast of rising temperatures again is worrying. We need a proper monsoon, not just a few days of rain.

IMD forecasts are helpful, but sometimes the localised showers are so unpredictable. One area gets flooded, the next street is completely dry. Hope the corporation is prepared for waterlogging in low-lying areas of Chennai.

Visiting Coimbatore next week. This is useful to know, though it says Western Ghat districts will get rain over the weekend. Will pack an umbrella just in case!

Erode at 40°C even with this system? That's intense. Shows how the heat island effect in interior cities is no joke. The rain is only a temporary fix. Long-term, we need more green cover.

As someone from Puducherry, we really appreciate these detailed forecasts. The gusty winds along with rain can sometimes cause power cuts. Good that they are advising caution.

Respectfully, while the forecast is welcome, I wish the IMD website and app were more user-friendly and updated in real-time. Often, by the time the alert comes, the rain has already started!
