Governor Arlekar hails "new era" for TN Assembly after his address read in full in after 3-year gap

Chennai, June 18

Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar, on Thursday, who delivered his customary address to the 17th Legislative Assembly Session, expressed happiness over the smooth conduct of the proceedings, saying it marked the dawn of a new era in the House.

This ended a three-year period during which the address had been disrupted by controversies.

"I am delighted to inform the people that today marks the dawn of a new era in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. After three years, the Governor's full address was read in the Assembly today without any interruptions, which brings immense satisfaction to the heart," he said.

In a democracy, a government that is governed must establish a coordinated, harmonious relationship across all parties, fulfill the people's expectations and needs, and operate with the aim of being a stable, exemplary administration. The fact that we have all begun this journey together towards that goal brings satisfaction to the mind," the Governor stated in a message.

The session began at 10 am with the rendition of Tamil Thai Vazhthu, followed by the National Anthem. The National Anthem was also sung at the conclusion of the Governor's address.

Former Governor RN Ravi had walked out of the Assembly earlier this year and during previous sessions in 2024 and 2025, citing alleged disrespect to the National Anthem.

As a Tamilian, I'm glad the address went smoothly. But honestly, the Governor's claim of a "new era" feels a bit over the top. It should be normal for the Governor's address to be read without disruption. The fact that it took 3 years to get back to basics shows how broken our political culture has become. 😤

What a relief! The constant walkouts and disruptions were an embarrassment. I remember how RN Ravi walked out over the National Anthem issue - such unnecessary theatrics. Happy to see Governor Arlekar taking a more conciliatory approach. This is how democracy should work - with respect and dialogue, not tantrums.

While I appreciate the smooth conduct, let's not forget that the previous Governor had legitimate concerns about National Anthem protocol being respected. The fact that both anthems were sung properly today shows that the DMK government could have avoided this whole mess earlier. Better late than never I guess.

I'm from Delhi and follow Tamil Nadu politics closely. This is actually a big deal. The Governor's address sets the legislative agenda for the year. Without it being read properly, important bills and policy announcements get delayed. Glad to see both sides finally putting the state's interests above their political vendettas. 👏

The irony is that both the Centre and the state have been playing politics with this issue for years. Now suddenly everyone is cooperative? I'll believe it when I see consistent behavior. One smooth session doesn't make a new era. But acha hai for now - at least the people's work isn't being held hostage anymore.
