IAF Now Recruits Technical Officers Through GATE Scores, No AFCAT Needed

The Indian Air Force has introduced a GATE Score scheme for direct entry into its Technical Branch as officers. Candidates with valid GATE scores are exempt from the AFCAT written exam and are shortlisted directly for AFSB testing. Eligible applicants must be aged 20-26 with a B.E./B.Tech degree and at least 60% aggregate marks. The initiative aims to provide flexibility, allowing candidates to apply via both AFCAT and GATE schemes.

IAF introduces GATE-based entry for Technical branch officers recruitment

New Delhi, May 26

Those intending to join the Technical Branch of the Indian Air Force as officers can now apply based on their Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering scores, officials said on Tuesday.

Candidates possessing a valid GATE score will be eligible for direct shortlisting for testing at the Air Force Selection Boards (AFSBs), under this new initiative.

Such candidates will be exempt from the preliminary written examination, known as the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT).

The GATE Score scheme will be applicable exclusively for induction into the Technical Branch.

The AFCAT will continue to serve as the standard admission test for induction into all branches of the IAF, including the Technical Branch (for those who do not have a valid GATE score).

According to an official statement, the entry-level educational qualifications for the GATE Score scheme will remain consistent with the existing induction criteria for the Technical Branch via AFCAT.

A comprehensive list of acceptable GATE subjects have been formally promulgated by the IAF in AFCAT Notification 02/2026, accessible at https:\\www.afcat.edcil.co.in and www.careeriaf.gov.in.

"To provide maximum flexibility and opportunity to aspirants, eligible candidates may apply for the Technical Branch through both the AFCAT and the GATE Score schemes, as per their choice," the statement says.

For regular updates on Officers' Entry schemes in IAF, prospective candidates are to follow official social media accounts of DISHA Indian Air Force @careeriniaf (Instagram and X) and @DISHA by Indian Air Force (Facebook, Youtube, Linkedin).

Direct shortlisting for selection is done exclusively on merit using the candidate's valid GATE score. Shortlisted candidates are then directly called for AFSB testing. The candidates between 20 to 26 years are eligible for the test. Candidates must possess a four-year B.E./B.Tech degree (or equivalent) in eligible engineering disciplines with at least 60 per cent aggregate marks, and must have passed with Physics and Mathematics.

The selection procedure for Technical Officers through GATE is rigorous and comprises two main stages designed to identify suitable candidates:

Shortlisting: Candidates will first be shortlisted based on their performance and scores in the GATE examination. This initial stage filters applicants based on academic merit.

Interview: Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to appear for an AFSB interview. This interview assesses a candidate's personality, aptitude, and suitability for a career in the Indian Air Force.

It is important for candidates to note the distinction in service selection boards across different branches of the armed forces:

For Army: The selection board is known as SSB (Services Selection Board).

For Air Force: The selection board is specifically termed AFSB (Air Force Selection Board).

Impressive initiative but I hope the AFSB testing remains rigorous enough to filter character, not just technical knowledge. GATE score is just a number - we need officers with integrity and leadership. Also, 60% aggregate seems a bit steep for engineering graduates these days. Fair point?

As someone who studied engineering in India before moving to the UK, I wish this option existed when I was applying! The IAF is smart to leverage GATE's credibility. But how will they handle candidates from different GATE years? Scores vary annually - hope there's normalization.

Yaar, this is good but why only Technical Branch? What about other branches like Flying or Ground Duty? Many students excel in GATE but also have strong aptitude for other roles. Also, the age limit of 20-26 might exclude some talented GATE toppers who start engineering late. Just saying... 🤔

Excellent news for engineering graduates! The AFSB interview will still ensure only the best-suited candidates make it through. I like that they've listed eligible GATE subjects clearly - stops confusion. My cousin is an IAF officer and he says this will significantly reduce the talent drain from technical fields. Well done, IAF! 👏

Good step but I worry this might create a two-tier system - GATE vs AFCAT candidates. Will GATE entrants be perceived as 'superior' in the AFSB? Also, the AFCAT still exists for non-GATE folks, so it's not closing doors. But transparency in shortlisting criteria is a must. Hope they publish cutoff
