How Ryan Gosling's 'dream' casting for 'Project Hail Mary' came through?

Screenwriter Drew Goddard calls Ryan Gosling's casting "a dream" for the ambitious sci-fi film 'Project Hail Mary,' based on Andy Weir's novel.

"It was a dream. Ryan Gosling was already attached when they came to me. - Drew Goddard"

Los Angeles, March 22

Hollywood star Ryan Gosling's casting for 'Project Hail Mary' has been called "a dream" by the writer of the film.

Screenwriter Drew Goddard was confident when writing the script as he knew Ryan would be able to handle whatever he wrote and they were "in good hands with our lead", reports 'Female First UK'.

He told The Hollywood Reporter, "It was a dream. Ryan Gosling was already attached when they came to me. Any fear I had about how we were going to pull this off was instantly allayed by the knowledge that Ryan was doing this with us".

"He can do anything. Whatever I write, he's going to be able to pull off. That set a tone of knowing this was going to be really difficult but also knowing we were in good hands with our lead", he added.

As per 'Female First UK', 'Project Hail Mary' is based on the 2021 science fiction novel by American writer Andy Weir, which tells the story of a school teacher and former biologist Ryland Grace, who wakes up aboard a spacecraft afflicted with amnesia.

While movie budgets are being slashed across the board, Goddard insisted 'Project Hail Mary' needed its mega budget and he hopes its success will provide hope for new projects across the board.

He said, "A lot of my worry about the budget goes into the decision to do the project. Before I start writing, I want to make sure that what I think it's going to cost lines up with what we think it's going to take. I've learned from experience, if they feel comfortable, they're going to let me be crazier. So, something like Cabin in the Woods was so crazy. I knew we needed to make that for cheap. So I write that to be affordable, because then they'll let me go bananas in the end. With this one, there was no cheap version of this movie".

"We're not making this unless we're big and swinging for the fences. But it did feel like the type of movie you could do that. It felt like the type of movie that you're gonna bring your kids to, you're gonna bring your grandparents to. That's what you're looking for to justify the budgets. And when I'm writing it, I try to be thoughtful. But I don't try to ever undercut the ambition. I have a big imagination. Chris and Phil have an even bigger imagination. Once we've made the decision to say yes, we don't really think about the budget. It's more about what's going to make the best movie. I don't want to sound fully optimistic. It is sad what's happening but we're going to go down swinging. And we're definitely going down swinging with this movie", he added.

Excited for this! Gosling has that everyman quality which is perfect for a school teacher role. Also, good to see a writer so confident in his lead. In our Bollywood, sometimes the script is written *for* the star, not the other way around. This feels more organic.

"We're not making this unless we're big and swinging for the fences." I appreciate that ambition. In an era of safe sequels and superhero fatigue, a big, original sci-fi movie is a risk worth taking. Hope it pays off and encourages more such projects globally.

The part about bringing your kids and grandparents is key. That's the mark of a truly great film – one that crosses generations. We have that with some of our classic Hindi films. Hope this achieves that universal appeal. The budget talk is a bit worrying though – hope it doesn't become all spectacle, no soul.

Andy Weir's book was brilliant! If they can capture that mix of science, humour, and desperation, it will be a winner. Gosling needs to bring a lot of emotional depth while being alone for most of it. Tough job. Fingers crossed for the adaptation! 🚀

With all respect to the writer's confidence, I find it a bit concerning when a project is deemed to have "no cheap version." It sets a very high bar for success. In India, we've seen amazing stories told with limited budgets ('Tumbbad', 'The Lunchbox'). Creativity shouldn't be solely budget-dependent. Hope the story justifies
