Heavy rain likely in TN; 10 districts on alert today
Chennai, May 24
An atmospheric circulation prevailing over the southeast Bay of Bengal and its adjoining central parts is likely to trigger widespread rainfall activity across Tamil Nadu in the coming days, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.
The weather system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to several districts across the state.
According to the weather department, heavy rainfall is likely today in 10 districts -- Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi and Namakkal.
The RMC said rainfall activity is expected to intensify further over the next few days due to the prevailing weather conditions.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in several districts, including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Tiruchy, Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul, Theni and Madurai. The same pattern is expected to continue the following day, with many of these districts likely to witness intense rainfall.
Officials have advised people living in vulnerable and low-lying regions to remain cautious as heavy downpours could lead to localised flooding and disruption in normal life.
The weather department also stated that on May 26, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over the hilly regions of Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts, along with Nilgiris, Theni, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari districts.
Despite the expected rain activity, there is unlikely to be any significant change in maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, according to the weather department.
Temperatures are expected to remain close to normal levels.
For Chennai, the forecast predicts a partly cloudy sky with light to moderate rain likely during the evening or night hours.
Intermittent showers and cloud cover are expected to bring relatively pleasant weather conditions to the city.
Authorities have urged residents, particularly in hilly and waterlogging-prone areas, to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions.

As someone living in Vellore, I'm a bit worried. Last year during similar rains, my street was flooded for two days straight. Hope the local corporation has cleaned the drains properly this time. They always announce warnings but ground-level preparation is poor. Still, good to see the forecast being shared widely so people can stay alert. 🙏
Great news for farmers! Our paddy fields in Thanjavur region have been struggling with dry conditions. But hope the rain doesn't come too heavy and damage the crops. Typical Tamil Nadu weather - when it rains, it pours literally! Waited so long for this and now they're saying 10 districts on alert. Be safe everyone!
I'm visiting from the US for work and this is my first time experiencing Tamil Nadu's monsoon season. Interesting to see how the system works here. Stay safe everyone - the local authorities seem to be on top of it with these warnings. Planning to head to Coimbatore tomorrow, hope the weather holds up!
Typical RMC prediction - they always overhype rain forecasts but half the time it's just drizzles! Living in Chennai, I've seen countless 'heavy rain' alerts that turned into 2 mm of rain. But then again, better to be safe than sorry. At least the temperature is dropping which is a blessing. Just hope the infrastructure can handle if it actually pours heavily. 😅
Hilly areas like Nilgiris and Kodaikanal need extra attention during such times. Landslides are a real risk. My cousin in Ooty said they've already started getting showers.
