CM Vijay to visit Karur on July 10-11, meet families of stampede victims
Chennai, June 30
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will visit Karur on July 10 and 11, marking his first visit to the district since the tragic stampede that claimed 41 lives during a TRK public meeting on September 27 last year.
The stampede, one of the worst political rally disasters in recent years, triggered nationwide outrage and raised serious concerns over crowd management and event safety.
The incident remains under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the case under the supervision of the Supreme Court.
In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, Vijay was unable to travel to Karur because of security concerns and restrictions imposed by the police. Instead, he addressed the bereaved families through a video conference, expressing his condolences and assuring them of his support during the difficult period.
Subsequently, the families of all those who lost their lives in the stampede were invited to Mamallapuram, where Vijay met them personally. During the meeting, he offered his condolences and handed over financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh to each affected family.
The amount was transferred directly to their respective bank accounts without delay.
At the time, Vijay had also assured the families that additional assistance would be extended after assessing their long-term needs and family circumstances.
According to party and official sources, the Chief Minister will utilise his upcoming two-day visit to Karur to once again meet the families of the victims and personally convey his condolences.
The visit is also expected to reaffirm the government's commitment to supporting those affected by the tragedy.
Apart from meeting the bereaved families, CM Vijay will participate in a series of official government programmes in the district. He is scheduled to inaugurate several welfare initiatives and development projects during the visit.
The Karur tour is expected to mark the beginning of the Chief Minister's district-wide outreach programme across Tamil Nadu.
Following Karur, CM Vijay is likely to visit several other districts to thank the people for their support in the Assembly elections and to review the implementation of government schemes.
During these tours, he is expected to attend official functions organised at district Collectorates, inaugurate new development projects and welfare schemes, and interact with the public as part of the government's efforts to strengthen grassroots governance and maintain direct engagement with citizens across the state.

This is a positive step. The families deserve face-to-face assurance from the leader. I just hope this isn't just a photo-op before the next election cycle. Real change means stricter safety protocols for all public meetings, regardless of party. Let's see if the CBI investigation leads to accountability.
Finally! It took almost a year for this visit. While the compensation was timely, the delay in personally meeting affected families is disappointing. The district outreach programme is a good initiative, but the CM should prioritise preventing such disasters over political tours. Hope Karur visit brings closure to the victims' families.
As someone who follows Indian politics, this seems like a necessary but belated gesture. The video conference approach right after the tragedy felt inadequate for such a massive loss. The development projects being inaugurated are important, but the primary focus should remain on the families and the investigation results.
I'm from Karur and the pain is still fresh here. The ₹20 lakh help was appreciated, but many families lost sole earners. The CM should announce long-term support like job reservations or educational scholarships for children. Visits are good, but concrete policies for disaster prevention matter more. Let's hold the organisers accountable too.
