Heavy Rain Forecast for Five Tamil Nadu Districts Today

Tamil Nadu is set for heavy rain in five districts on Tuesday, with the weather department warning of strong winds in the hill areas of Coimbatore and in Nilgiris, Theni, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri. A low-pressure system over Tamil Nadu and south interior Karnataka is driving the wet weather across the region. Several other districts, including Chennai, can expect moderate showers, with thunderstorms and lightning likely in some places.

Heavy rain forecast in five TN districts today; strong winds in hilly areas

Chennai, Oct 6

Heavy rain is likely in five districts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, with the weather department forecasting rainfall accompanied by strong winds in the hill areas of Coimbatore and in Nilgiris, Theni, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri.

In a press release, the department said a low-pressure system prevailing over Tamil Nadu and south interior Karnataka was influencing weather conditions across the region.

The forecast indicates that several other districts could receive moderate rainfall during the day, while parts of Chennai may experience moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

The heavy rain forecast covers the mountainous parts of Coimbatore district, rather than the entire district. Nilgiris and Theni, along with the northern districts of Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri, are the other areas where heavier showers are expected. Strong winds could accompany rainfall in these locations, according to the department.

Moderate rain is likely at some places in Tiruppur, Erode, Salem and Namakkal.

The forecast also includes Tirupattur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram, extending the expected rainfall across several western and northern districts.

In central Tamil Nadu and the Cauvery delta region, moderate showers are expected in Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur and Perambalur. Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam are also included in the department's rainfall outlook for Tuesday.

Further south, the department has forecast moderate rain in Pudukkottai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram. Dindigul, Madurai and Virudhunagar could also receive moderate showers, along with Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari.

For Chennai, the outlook points to moderate rainfall in some areas, with thunder and lightning likely to accompany the showers.

The forecast does not indicate uniform rainfall across the city, and the intensity could differ between neighbourhoods over the course of Tuesday. The weather outlook, therefore, spans a broad stretch of the state, with heavy rainfall concentrated in the five specified districts and moderate showers expected across numerous other locations.

The department's assessment links these conditions to the prevailing low-pressure system over Tamil Nadu and adjoining south interior Karnataka. Tuesday's forecast places particular emphasis on the combination of heavy rain and strong winds in the identified districts. Elsewhere, the expected rainfall is largely moderate, including in several districts across the western belt, the northern interior, the delta and southern Tamil Nadu. In the capital, thunderstorms and lightning remain a feature of the forecast for areas receiving rain.
