Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini keeps promise, includes history of Sikh Gurus in Class 8 curriculum
Chandigarh, June 11
Fulfilling a major promise to integrate regional and national heritage into the state's education system, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Thursday officially directed the inclusion of the history of Sikh Gurus and Baba Banda Singh Bahadur into the Class 8 curriculum.
The initiative, aimed at introducing young minds to the rich legacy of sacrifice, bravery, and righteousness, stems from an announcement made by the Chief Minister during the 350th Shahidi Samagam (martyrdom commemoration) of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji in the state.
Speaking on the development, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini emphasised that the teachings of the Sikh Gurus transcend religious boundaries and carry a universal message for all of humanity.
"From Guru Nanak Dev Ji to Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the Gurus have consistently championed the values of humanity, equality, selfless service, compassion, brotherhood, and social justice," CM Saini stated. "They inspired society to rise above the divides of caste, creed, and class to work for the collective welfare of all."
He further added that the legacy of the Sikh Gurus and Baba Banda Singh Bahadur is a national treasure.
"Their lives are not the heritage of a single community alone, but serve as an enduring source of inspiration for the entire country," the Chief Minister remarked.

I'm not from Haryana, but this is a brilliant move. Our history textbooks often gloss over Sikh contributions. Learning about Guru Gobind Singh's courage and Guru Tegh Bahadur's sacrifice will inspire students to stand up for justice. Hope other states follow suit.
Good first step, but let's also ensure the curriculum is balanced and factual. Don't want it becoming a propaganda tool. Include all communities' contributions to make it truly inclusive.
As an American who's been working in India for a few years, I'm genuinely impressed. The Sikh Gurus' messages of equality and selfless service are universal. This kind of curriculum can really shape young minds positively.
Great decision! My grandfather used to tell me stories of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur's bravery. Finally, kids will learn about it in school instead of just from elders. 👏 Would love to see similar inclusion of other regional heroes too.
Teaching about Sikh Gurus' universal values is excellent. But I hope the curriculum also covers their conflicts with the Mughal empire honestly - history should show both the good and the challenging parts. Otherwise it's just whitewashing.
