Bharatiya Janata Party leader K Annamalai on Saturday paid tribute to AIADMK founder and former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran on his birth anniversary.

He remembered his welfare measures and said that the legendary leader continues to live in the hearts of the people of Tamil Nadu.

In a post on X, Annamalai wrote, "Today marks the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, revolutionary leader, Bharat Ratna Dr. M.G.R. He implemented welfare schemes to find political solutions for the hunger, tears, and pain of the poor and common people."

"Housing schemes, welfare programs for widows and differently-abled persons, mid-day meals in schools, these and many other welfare initiatives still speak of his name. We pay homage and celebrate the glory of revolutionary leader M.G.R., who will forever live in the hearts of the people of Tamil Nadu," the post read.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to the legendary actor and politician MG Ramachandran.

He said MGR's contributions to Tamil Nadu's development and efforts in promoting Tamil culture were outstanding and added that the country will continue working to fulfil MGR's vision for society.

In a post on X, PM Modi shared a video and wrote, "Paying homage to the exceptional MGR on his Jayanti. His contribution to Tamil Nadu's progress is outstanding. Equally noteworthy is his role in popularising Tamil culture. We will always keep working to realise his vision for our society."

Marudur Gopala Menon Ramachandran, popularly known as MGR, was born on January 17, 1917, in Kandy, Sri Lanka, to Maradhur Gopala Menon and Satyabhama, who were Nairs from Kerala.

The actor-turned-politician MGR founded his party, AIADMK, after a feud with DMK chief M Karunanidhi in 1972.

MG Ramachandran, founder of AIADMK, served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for ten years between 1977 and 1987. MGR was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1988.

MGR made his acting debut in 1936 with the film Sathi Leelavathi, directed by Ellis R. Dungan, and rose to prominence with the 1954 movie Malaikkallan. He won the National Film Award for Best Actor for Rickshawkaran in 1972

He received the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards for Best Actor for the film 'Adimaippenn.'

While his contributions are undeniable, we must also remember that today's politicians should focus on creating their own legacy of development, not just riding on past glory. Respectful homage is one thing, but we need current action.
