"Every match crucial for us": Indian women's hockey captain Salima as team leaves for Australia tour

Bengaluru, May 21

The Indian Women's Hockey Team left for their tour of Australia in Perth on Thursday. The team is scheduled to play four matches against the hosts on May 26, 27, 29 and 30 at the Perth Hockey Stadium.

The tour will offer a series of competitive matches, giving the Indian Women's Hockey Team an opportunity to test themselves against one of the best teams in the world. Following the conclusion of the Australia tour, the team will travel to Auckland, New Zealand, for the FIH Hockey Women's Nations Cup 2026, scheduled to take place from June 15-21, as per a press release from Hockey India.

Having undergone rigorous preparations at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre in Bengaluru ahead of the tour, Captain Salima Tete expressed that the upcoming matches against Australia would serve as a crucial stepping stone.

"The entire squad is really looking forward to this tour. Playing against Australia, especially on their home turf, is always a tough challenge, and that is exactly the kind of challenge we need at this stage of our preparations, with crucial international tournaments coming up later this year," said the captain ahead of the team's departure.

"We have had an intense training camp over the past few weeks, during which we worked hard on our fitness, combinations, and tactical shape. I feel the team has come together really well, and the matches in Perth will give us a chance to put everything we have worked on into practice against one of the best sides in the world," she added.

With the FIH Hockey Women's Nations Cup 2026 firmly on the horizon, followed by the World Cup and the Asian Games, Tete underlined the importance of the Australia tour ahead of a crucial period for India.

"Every match in Perth will be crucial for us. We want to head into the Nations Cup in Auckland with momentum and confidence. Australia will push us to our limits, and we want to use that to become a stronger, more cohesive unit."

"The Nations Cup itself will be another important marker for us as we build towards the Asian Games and the World Cup. We want to peak at the right time, and these tournaments are all stepping stones towards that," Salima Tete concluded.

This is great but I wish Hockey India gave more exposure to our women's team. They only play a handful of top-level matches per year, while teams like Australia and Netherlands play 15-20 such games. Our girls have so much potential—they need consistent international competition, not just one-off tours before major events.

The Nations Cup, then World Cup, then Asian Games—this is a packed calendar and I'm loving it! Salima is spot on about peaking at the right time. We saw what the men's team did at the Olympics. I have full faith in these talented women to make India proud. #WomenInSports 🏑🇮🇳

As someone who follows hockey closely, I think this is a smart move by the coaching staff. The SAI Bengaluru camp has produced some of our best players over the years. Playing Australia away is always tough, but it's the best way to prepare for knockout tournaments. Rooting for India! 🙌

Such a well-spoken captain! Salima Tete exemplifies the new generation of Indian sportswomen—confident, ambitious, and team-oriented. The way she talks about becoming a "stronger, more cohesive unit" shows real leadership. Let's go, girls! Make every match count! 🌟

I just wish more people in India paid attention to women's hockey. When was the last time a match was telecast live on a major sports channel? Players like Salima, Vandana Katariya, and Savita Punia deserve better visibility. Hope this tour gets some
