Education key to nation-building in AI era: Delhi L-G T.S. Sandhu

Delhi L-G T.S. Sandhu says education is the strongest foundation for nation-building in the AI era, urging graduates to embrace continuous learning and leadership.

"Education acquires its true meaning, when it uplifts, not only individual lives, but also the communities, and institutions around us. - T.S. Sandhu"

New Delhi, May 14

Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu said on Thursday that education remains the strongest foundation for nation-building in this era of rapid transformation driven by artificial intelligence and technology.

Addressing the graduating students at the Convocation of B.R. Ambedkar University, L-G Sandhu encouraged the youth to move beyond college degrees and embrace continuous learning, innovation, and leadership.

"For the graduating students, present here today, this occasion is therefore, not merely the conclusion of your academic journey. It is the beginning of a larger responsibility. The knowledge and values you have acquired here must ultimately contribute, to society, and to the nation, in meaningful ways," he said.

"I would also urge you to remain deeply connected to the society around you. Education acquires its true meaning, when it uplifts, not only individual lives, but also the communities, and institutions around us," the L-G added.

"Whether you choose careers, in public policy, academia, law, media, entrepreneurship, social work, or the arts; carry with you, a strong sense of integrity, empathy, and public purpose," he said.

L-G Sandhu said that Delhi itself, stands as a powerful reminder, of this shared responsibility.

This city represents both history and aspiration, the L-G added.

"It is shaped by diversity, strength, and ambition. Its future will depend, significantly, on the contributions of young people, like you -- individuals capable of combining, professional excellence with social awareness, and national commitment," he said.

Urging students to contribute meaningfully toward building a future-ready city, the L-G added, "It is heartening to see the University emerge as a preferred institution through Common University Entrance Test (CUET), rooted in the values of inclusion, academic excellence, and critical thinking."

In a message on social media platform X, L-G Sandhu said, "I encouraged the graduates to move beyond college degrees and embrace continuous learning, innovation, and leadership. As they step into the professional world, I urged them to uphold the values of integrity and public purpose and contribute meaningfully toward building a future-ready #ViksitDilli and #ViksitBharat."

Makes sense but easier said than done. How many graduates can afford to keep learning when they have family responsibilities? The government needs to provide more scholarships and upskilling programs if they want us to embrace continuous learning. Talk is cheap otherwise.

As someone working in tech, I completely agree! The AI revolution is real - skills we learn today might be obsolete in 5 years. But the values L-G mentioned - integrity, empathy, public purpose - those never go out of style. That's true nation-building!

I graduated during the pandemic and this speech resonates with me. Education isn't just about getting a job - it's about contributing to society. Delhi needs young minds who can blend professionalism with social awareness. Good to see leadership thinking this way!

All these speeches sound nice but ground reality is different. Students from lower economic backgrounds can't even afford basic education, forget about AI-era skills. The L-G should focus on improving Delhi government schools first. Show results then talk philosophy.

The point about 'education uplifting communities' is powerful. We need more Ambedkar University type institutions that focus on inclusive excellence. Our youth has talent but lacks guidance. If we channel that right, #ViksitBharat is definitely achievable!
