Dr Nikhil Tondon appointed as officiating Director of AIIMS Delhi
By By Shalini Bhardwaj, New Delhi, April 27
Dr Nikhil Tandon has been appointed as the officiating Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi. He is currently the Professor and Head of Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, and Dean, according to the Office Memorandum.
Dr Nikhil Tondon will look after the functions of the Director in this post to his current duties, "With immediate effect for six months or till a regular Director is appointed, whichever is earlier," read the office memorandum.
This is a "working arrangement" -- not a full appointment. The search-cum-selection committee for the permanent director will be next.
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi Director, Dr M Sirinivas, was relieved from the AIIMS Delhi Director post, and he has been appointed Full-time Member of the NITI Aayog. He will be replacing member of NITI Aayog, Dr VK Paul.
Dr M Sirinivas was the Director of AIIMS Delhi. He was appointed as Director of AIIMS on September 22, 2022. Earlier, he was the dean of Employees' State Insurance Company (ESIC) Hospital and Medical College, Hyderabad.

Another temporary arrangement? AIIMS Delhi needs a permanent leader, not a series of stop-gap appointments. The search committee should expedite the process. This uncertainty isn't good for the institution.
Dr Tandon is an excellent choice for now. He has a stellar record at AIIMS. But I wish the government would stop these "officiating" posts and just appoint a permanent director already. Patients and staff need stability. 😕
Moving from AIIMS Director to NITI Aayog is a strange career shift. Dr Srinivas must have a lot to offer in policy-making, but I hope his departure doesn't create a vacuum at AIIMS. The hospital handles so many critical cases every day.
Good luck to Dr Tandon! 🎉 I've heard he's very dedicated. But I do worry that being Dean and now acting Director will overburden him. AIIMS needs a full-time Director who can focus entirely on the institution's challenges, especially faculty and resident welfare.
This "working arrangement" for six months without a clear timeline for a permanent appointment is troubling. AIIMS Delhi is a national institute, not a temporary posting. The government should prioritise finding the right leader instead of these short-term fixes.
